I am looking to assemble/own my first AR.  Due to budget and current political conditions I am looking to buy a stripped lower NOW.  I was thinking of either a Noveske or SNS Ind. (Gotta love the skull and crossbones) lower.  I also look forward to the project of putting one these together.  Sounds like good times with a little profanity mixed in.  My first priority would be building a 5.56x45mm M4gery upper, but I would LOVE to have a .22LR upper. My question is; could I build my own dedicated upper with all of the advantages of one of the Spikes Tactical or Tactical Solutions uppers without the cost?  What I mean by advantages is; Reliablity, Accuracy, Correct barrel twist. I wouldn't need the gas system or the buffer/spring?  That could save a few Lincolns.  Or would I be better off buying a ciener a couple of BDM magazines and calling it a day?

I'm trying to build a dedicated 22LR "match" upper to duplicate my RRA NM upper.  I'm buying parts as I can afford from the EE, and new when I find a deal, and I'll still end up with more money in it than a Spikes or Tac-sol.  Hopefully, the accuracy will be there though.

Build the M4gery, then buy a conversion (CMMG, Spikes, or Ciener) kit for it.  Accuracy with the 22 will be a crapshoot, but definetly not "match"- -but good enough for tin cans at 50 yards.  You'll get the cheap trigger time with the 22 and learn how to use your rifle.   5.56 likes 1-7 to 1-9 twist, 22lr likes the slower 1-16 twist, plus the 5.56 bore is a few thousandths larger than a 22 lr- -sometimes the conversion kits shoot well, sometimes the pie plate better be close.

You can always buy or build a dedicated 22lr upper, and sell the Ciener to fund it later.  Or use it as a base to build a dedicated upper (machine the insert off, and get a barrel machined to match).   I don't think you can build one much cheaper than a dedicated upper, unless you got a lathe, and can get a good 22 barrel for next to nothing.

Killer, it's always more expensive to build piecemeal than to buy a complete unit.

Spike's will build whatever configuration you want.

Actually, it's not in the AR world.  Under normal market situations.

I paid $900 for my first AR (back in the day ), Bushmaster 20" A3 HBAR;  knowing what I know now I could have bought the upper for about $450 and the complete lower for $250-$300, saving myself $150 - $200.

It's cheaper to build unless you build with the fancy stuff.

I think it is cheaper to buy a complete upper unless you want something specific.  The last time I checked, a barrel assembly from KKF was $325.  Ciener conversion kit is ~$150 at Midway USA.  Add an upper (~$125), and charging handle (~$20) and your at $600.  Plus you still need handguards.  I think a Spikes upper is about $550 complete.

Times are tight and I know money is too. But everything is flying out of stock, Everywhere. I was gonna build an upper with an XM 177 Barrel. Gone. Better Buy what you want Now if you find it. With the Promise of ObamaBan, people are running scared and buying anything they can put their hands on.............. It "Ain't" gonna end soon either.
