If I understand correctly, my standard carbine buffer needs to be heavier to reduce
felt recoil and make it run more reliably with my 9mm upper on the lower.  Is it possible to just make my existing buffer heavier using different materials than what's in it now. (and more of it)?

You would need to add tungsten which is sometimes hard to find and work with. We offer the ST-SST which works great in all calibers.

You'd be better off getting a 9mm specific buffer.  A normal H buffer has one (of the three) counterweights replaced with a tungsten one.  You really need something a lot heavier than that with a blowback pistol conversion.

A Slash 9mmQ Buffer, or a Spike ST-9X should do a nice job. The extra length of these is a good idea, 9mm is bad about breaking mag catches with a standard length buffer. Also, a Wolff spring is a worthwhile upgrade too.

Does the factory supplied buffer on an RRA 9mm need to be replaced?

Agreed.

9-Q Buffers - The Original S/S Extended 9mm Buffer

I also recommend using Wolff XP buffer springs in any blowback-operated AR.
