I am also interested in the AR 57.  It seems like it could be a fun varmint gun.  I have seen some a local gun shows in the Dallas/FW area, but can not remember the price.  And as far as CheaperThanDirt they are usually always a little more $$ than most other places.  I have been thinking of getting an upper off gunbroker but the near $700 is a lot if it does not work well.  I guess also soon avaiable from www.militarygunsupply.com for $695.

Yes.  I got one in the mail Thursday.  The finish on the upper is pretty good.  The magazines tend to fit tight.  The pin holes line up on my mega machine lower but not on my RRA.  The manual says the lower should work with any mil-spec lower.

The ar57 has a heavier recoil than the ps90, and a louder bang.

Brass is ejected rather fast out the magazine well and tends land forward on mine.

So far I like the AR57.  I am going to buy another lower and have a dedicated rifle.  Now I just need to buy mags, at about $50-70 a magazine.

How heavy is it with a full mag compared to other uppers? Thanks, AC

I thought so too, but it looks like mounting a scope would pretty much be impossible due to the top seating mag.

Still cool with a reddot....

The AR57 weighs about the same as a regular carbine.  I didn't really notice a difference in weight except that the balance is a little forward.  The forward rails are really light.

I kind of like this upper.  I will have a chance to shoot it some more this week.  Gonna destroy some hard drives for work. :)

Keep us posted on reliability......that is the key factor for me.

I have not had a malfunction yet, but I have only fired 100rnds.

Two things that bugged me so far.
No last round bolt hold-open.
The mags do not seat smothly.

The mags tend to hang up until you give them a rap on top.  However the rap tends to shave a bit of plastic off the magazines.  Unsuprisingly seeting the magazines gets easier with mag use.  There is a slight lip on the upper near the picatinny rail that should have a chamfer.  I might just take a dremil buffing wheel to that lip to smooth the edge.

I am seriously thinking about this again.

I wonder if there are any concerns with the company not being around long term and part replacement issues.

There can't be too many specifc parts that would be prone to wear/breaking though.

It has it's own 1 piece bolt/carrier like a 9mm, so what are we looking at:

Extractor, Ejector, bolt, mag catch????????

Just trying to push myself over the hump and decide if this is something I should have or not.

Ammo cost:

5.56 decent quality FMJs are trpically $8 for 20, so $20 for 50
5.7 quality ammo with HPs or Ballistic tip style bullets are on the shelf here for $20 for 50.....that's a wash.

I know people reload 5.7, but I have read a few concerns with reloading the cartridge and the extra pressure it puts on the case neck.....may just be B.S.....I don't know.

I don't care that it wouldn't really work with a scope due to the mag location, but I would just run a reddot, for quick aqusition.

I wish it was like they originally planned and didn't use the full length bolt/carrier so we wouldn't HAVE to use a buffer tube on it. It would have been pretty cute with an ACE folder.

Do the irons and/or optics sit higher on this then an AR? It looks like the rail and front rail area are about 3/8" - 1/2" higher from the pics.

Mort,

Having one now and knowing what you know.......would you buy it again?

I always think that says it all.......

mort,

Do you have any info on the barrel with this upper? Is it chrome lined, stainless, chrome moly steel? If you know which supplier makes the barrel blank that would be good info as well.

I saw a dealer from Norristown PA selling these AR57 Uppers at the Valley Forge Gun Show this weekend for $700.00. The kit was a complete upper receiver, one magazine and one box of 5.7 ammunition. I do have his card.

I have an email into the manufacturer asking if I can run this on my M16 in full auto. When I hear back I will post their response.

HK_Dude, I am not sure yet.  I really do not have enough trigger time with the AR57 yet.  I only put 100 rounds down range.  This upper definitely has the cool factor going for it.  It seems to me to have more recoil than a ps90.  I will post a comparison when my buddy gets back from Ireland.  I plan to buy a dedicated lower for this upper this week if that tells you anything.

The craftsmanship is pretty good.  There are no machine marks, edges are crisp and the finish is excellent and matches my Mega lower.  I wish the charging handle was on the left side.  I need to buy a case of 5.7 and really give this upper a workout.

The case extraction is pretty aggressive.  This upper really snaps the brass out the bottom.  Sometimes the brass goes forward and sometimes back, but always fast.  I don't know if using a cut up magazine would work as a brass catcher, bouncing brass might cause jams.

Last week I did put an old truglo 2x red dot that I had lying around on the rail.  This is the first gun that I liked using this red dot with.  With AR rails and even my XCR this optic seemed too low.  The rail on the ar57 is higher than a standard ar15 and holds the truglo at the right height.  The EOtech I had on this rail seemed too close to the face.  I wish I had an aimpoint ML2 to put on here for testing.  I think that the aimpoints are going to be the optic of choice for anyone else who buys an ar57.  Mostly you will want a short tubed red dot so that the magazines can be inserted easily.  You are not going to be able to attach any high power scopes to this upper.  I doubt even an acog would fit well.

I do not know much about the barrel, it is not a light weight.  I do not know how to tell if it is chrome lined.  I did notice the a2 flash suppressor.

I got my upper for $715 after shipping with no mags.  I had to bum 2 mags and ammo off a buddy.  I would say grab that lower for $700 and a mag.  I can not find any 50rnd p90 mags for under $62 online right now.

I have some pictures and I will try to post them this week.

ETA anyone know a cheep source for 5.7, the sooner I get ammo the sooner I can give a good range report.

Hell yeah!  That would scream BULLPUP!  Imagine adding the forward pistol grip trigger from this:

and a P90 like bridge to hold the optics.
