I've decided to sell my Ciener kit and get a dedicated upper.  I have been considering getting one from Spikes and then ran into a dilemma...  I'm not sure if I should get the 16" or have a lower SBR'd and get the 5.5".

Has anyone else faced this decision and what did you choose?  I know it will cost me an extra $200 so I'm still deciding if it will be worth it.  I just ordered my first can for a 22lr so I plan on using it on this upper.

Thanks for any advice you can give.

GET BOTH !!!
My 16" is GREAT and feels very light. A great shooting piece.

Well, I will probably only get 1, but just in case I'll rephrase the question to which should I get first?

I bought the 16" standard M4 upper. I figure if I grow tired of it, I could either have the barrel cut/recrowned to a shorter length, or just swap out for a short barrel. The more I shoot it though, the more I like it at 16". BTW, since the barrel is set back into the receiver, the barrel length appears as a 14.5". Compared to my 14.5" LMT, it is the same overall length.

I have a 5" SBR.  If you don't have to sell the ciener, I might just keep that in your 16" and buy the Spike 5.5" one.  I will end up getting a 16" one some day too, but the 5" is just awesome!

Any of you run either one suppressed?  Any thoughts?

I went with the 5" upper so I could run the Fed Bulk pack subsonic with a can.  I love it!  I live in Utah so I had to worry about the effect of our high elevation on making the round supersonic or not, otherwise I would have gone a bit longer at 5.5".  It runs great with a can!  The other great thing is that it looks bad ass and is so cheap to shoot!  It comes out with me shooting every single time I go.

Man, that is sweet!  And it's almost identical to what my set-up would look like except mine is a MEGA lower.  Why would you have gone with a longer barrel if you didn't have to worry about subsonic?

So, with a 5.5" you can get subsonic out of the federal bulk packs?

Here are 3 of mine.  I use them mostly suppressed.  I mainly shoot 22 anymore when I go to the range.  I have other calibers but the 22 is cheap and a blast to shoot.

I love my 5.5" Spikes upper. I was shooting with a 7.62 can but I have a Tac65 waiting on paper work. It's my favorite rifle to shoot. I have a Spikes fake can on it until I can get my .22 can. Plenty accurate enough for my needs.

I went with 5" to be safe with the federal bulk pack going subsonic in my altitude.  I've heard that some will go subsonic and some wont with a 5.5" here in Utah.  In other altitudes, I've heard that you can go as long as 6" with no problem shooting the federal bulk pack and keeping it subsonic.  I just went shorter to be sure.
