Will M261 mag inserts fit into a 10rd AR magazine?

Thanks,

I don't know to be honest - and I noticed your state, which kind of limits your ability to simply "upsize".

You might have to try a hollow body with some kind of block or fill in the .223 mag cavity to hold the subcal insert.

Good luck.

I feel your pain - we got 10 round problems too.

That said - the inserts fit into the 10 rd Armalite, ProMag, Oly (I don't know who actually mfg these but it's sold by a lot of companies.) Armalite link  Oly link

This is a straight 20 round length steel mag where the follower is notched to match vertical grooves on the side of the mag body.  The grooves and notches allow the follower to go all the way till bottomed out against the follower spring.  But the grooves prevent the loading of more than 10 rounds of 5.56 because the tops protrude into the path of the ammo column.  I hope the mag design hasn't been changed.

I know this a terrible explanation but I have these mags and use them with my 261s.

The inserts take a little bit of work to get into the mags but it does work.  I just checked one of the mags - I can't get the insert out.  I don't mind cause I bought these mags specifically to use with the 261 inserts.  I have 3 mags with 261 inserts plus the converted Orlite described below.  I can get the insert out of the Orlite.

I've also permanently blocked a 30 round mag so the follower can't rise to the top by drilling holes fore and aft thru the mag body and inserting and glueing pins or rods.  The follower must rise high enough to put pressure on the bottom of the 261 insert.  Of course this means the mag can no longer feed 5.56.  If you make sure the holes are close to the front and rear edges of the mag the 261 insert can fit in the mag.  This is not useful unless you can actually get a 30 rounder and may not meet the legal requirements for a non-hi-cap mag even though it cannot feed 5.56 at all.

YMMV

I compared a M261 insert to a plastic DPMS 10rd mag; it looks like it could be made to work, but would require trimming the front of the mag, removing the follower and spring, and some floorplate modification.
