I built this combo to offset the high cost of 5.56 ammo. I used a RRA upper and lower and mated it to a Colt 14.5" 1/12 twist barrel. I then had a Sabre A2 extended hider permanently attached to meet the barrel length requirements. I bought a Tasco ProPoint 1x32 with the 5 MOA dot and used a YHM riser to get it to co-witness. The rear sight is a UGT clone. The Ciener kit with a Black Dog mag makes the .22LR conversion complete.

My wife and 8 year old daughter are able to shoot this with no problems. It isn't uber tacti-kool, but it sure is fun and cheap to shoot. The 1/12 twist barrel gives me excellent groups out to 50 yards. The 5MOA dot is just fine at the close distances and I enjoy using it to shoot steel plates.

Well done.  Clean, neat and simple is always good.

I don't blame you for building a rifle for .22 ammo. I like shooting alot but can't afford to pay over $300.00 for 1000 rounds of .223 when I can buy 1000 rounds of .22 for less than $30.00. I'm not shooting at things over 100 yards anyways.

I did the same thing a year ago, you'll be pleased.

This is about 50 yards, 50 rounds of the bench with Federal bulk pack ammo

Is this a conversion kit or dedicated upper with .22lr barrel?

I'm confused because the OP said "dedicated" but also said "Colt barrel."

If he doesn't plan on running .223/5.56 through it - then it's dedicated.

He could weld up the locking lugs and shorten that barrel a bit if he wanted to...

I have made a similar move. I found a 1/12 at a gunshow (it was old and dusty but appeared unfired) and built it into a flat-top with the intention of useing it only for the ceiner. The smith who built it talked me into doing a regular build with gas tube and all. The weight and ballance really works for me so I ended up buying a regular bolt group to use it with 5.56 along with the Ceiner.
When shooting the Ceiner  It has decent accuracy but somewhat surprised me in that the accuracy is very similar to several of my other uppers with 1/9 bushmaster barrels.

My question to K9-Bob is have you compared the accuracy with the Ceiner in your 1/12 to the ceiner in another AR with a 1/9?

If you build it without a gas tube, if you build it on an upper that doesn't have a hole for a gas tube, if you just plan on NEVER using .223 in it at all, then it's dedicated.  I'm looking for the "right" barrel for such a project at the moment...  I have a flat-top 9mm upper (no gas tube hole) that is going to get a barrel with a long enough rifling twist to go well with .22 and use my M261 in it.  MANY IF NOT MOST "dedicated" .22LR ARs go this way.

My upper is a surplus 1x12 with the Ciener kit. I can still shoot 5.56 when I put the BCG back in the upper. So it's not "dedicated" so to speak. And I have compared the accuracy between this upper and my 1x9 middy upper. When the Ciener kit is in the 1x9 barrel, the group opens up about 2 more inches at the same distance. The 1x9 barrel is 16" CM HB non chrome lined, while the 1x12 is 20" and chrome lined. I was shooting my Ciener kit out of my middy for a year or so before I put the A1 upper together and found I could shoot 1500 rounds and it never plugged my gas tube. I did however run into a little bit of a leading problem with my chrome moly barrel. But now with a chrome lined barrel that's even four more inches longer, it's not a problem.

Dediicated = only for use with the Ciener conversion. That's why I chose the 1/12 barrel. It was only $230 and it shoots and groups great with .22LR.

Compared to my 1/7 twist upper, this setup allows me to hit a 6" steel plate at 100 yards. I'll have to take my camera to the range and post some pics of the group, but for cheap family fun, this combo works for me.

I bought the barrel new from a guy in EE.  Link

Tacti-kool is fun, but my wife and daughter could care less. I just wanted to build something that we could all get some fun out of. So far it's been a big hit with them.

Nice group. My first dedicated upper was with a 20" A1 upper, but it was a bit long for my daughter to shoot standing. The carbine is light enough that she and my wife can enjoy. Now I need to get one of those M60Joe loaders to save the wear and tear on my fingers.

I purchased the same barrel from bubbaguns
on the EE. Received my SDI extended A2 f/s
today. I'm going old school with mine, 604 Colt
slickside upper and a NDS 601 slabside lower.

Yes, they're world class fun. And it's amazing how fast you can shoot up 550 rounds. It's been a nice way to introduce the wife to an AR, and it helps keep her out of the 5.56 stash

What has been really fun for me is to teach my daughter to shoot. She says to me one day, "I don't want to shoot a pellet gun anymore....I want to shoot one of your fun guns!"

Life is good.

Cool build - I thought about buying that same barrel for the same purpose. Can you post pics of the groups as I am really curious how well that combo can group? Thanks

I will take my camera to the range the next time I go and get some groups posted. I know that it shoots better than my 1/7 twist barrel ever did.

I built mine using a KKF bbl, M1S 9mm upper, and a ciener conversion.

My wife likes it, but my daughter is only 13 months old, so whe's gonna have to wait a while....

Better to start them young, than never to teach them to shoot at all.
