I bought a Spike's 22 upper for my M16 and can not get it to run. Spike's has been very helpful in trying to cure my problem (new trigger and recoil springs) , but my rifle still stovepipes spent cases. I sent it back to Spike's and they said it ran all 6 of my mags. It rarely runs more than 3-6 rounds without stovepiping, the emptys come out just fine then one will get hung up. I changed the recoil spring (shorter and longer), trigger spring, checked the extracter, different ammo nothing seems to help. It jams in semi and full, it is very frustrating. Any suggestions? |

Your problem is the magazine. This is well known with ciener kits and is most common with the ciener steel mags. The case is hitting the magazine and deflecting upward instead of the case hitting the extractor and getting deflected outward. A while back, someone had a video of high speed film documenting the cause and the problem. The fix was to file the magazines down a bit so that the case wouldn't get deflected by the magazine. I don't have the link to that thread, maybe someone else does. Better yet, maybe a mod can locate it and make it a sticky. |
| go to page 8 of this section, see post by Mouseboy "problems with ciener kit jamming" and scroll down to innocent_bystander's excellent recommendation. It helped eliminate the same problem you are having for me. Great solution to common headache, thanks again innocent_bystander!!!!!!! |
| Chamber a round, then remove the magazine. Fire. Repeat that test 50 times. If the spent case is ejected successfully every time, the problem lies with your magazines. If there were any stovepipes, the problem is too much spring tension (hammer or recoil spring) or underpowered ammo. |

It worked awesome for me. Check the bolt catch for clearence also check the location of the auto sear and The location of your mag catch which could be a problem. If you can post a video I could most likely spot the problem right away. Another option would be to send me the complete gun not just the upper. I wouldn't mess with the upper or the mags as I know for a fact they run well together. Feel free to give me a call. |

I've found that different uppers and different conversions will not run well on some of my lowers. IMHO it is due to very small differences in tolerances for the mag catch cutouts, mag catches and the magazines. Running a 261 in a A1 upper on one of my A2 lowers = constant jams and FTF. Same upper with 261 on my NoDak A1 lower = 0 jams and 0 FTF. YMMV |
| There is 2 problems going on here. Im semi its short stroken the recoil spring needs to be about a 1/2" shorter. In FA its got bolt bounce and the recoil spring needs to be about a 1/2" longer. To get this thing to run reliable both ways your going to have to use two different recoil springs. |

I have a similar problem but mine works great in semi but won't cycle in full auto but a few rounds (3-5 shots) before either not cycling enough to cock the hammer or a spent case stuck somewhere (either in front or on top of the bolt). I have tried several different magazines so I don't think it is a magazine issue. I would like for the upper to work with my stardard M-16 lower and not have to replace the hammer spring. |
With all the Variables its Near Impossible to make one system work with everything. Different barrel lengths, suppressors, different triggers, full auto, ect.. A standard Semi-Auto 16" upper on a Standard Mil-spec lower is no problem, as soon as you start changing things sometimes you have to tune them. |

Badazzar15 thanks for the help. The upper works great now. I wouldn't think adding the anti-bounce weight and having the ball and detent option would make it work better in full auto. I guess the bolt was still bouncing even with the ball and detent. Like you said I guess I could use a heavier or stiffer spring and see if that works without the anti-bounce weight. Just need to find another spring. |
Give us a call we have full lenght springs as well as lakeside springs. |
