So I'm finally receiving parts I have been ordering over the last month to get my 9mm AR going. The question is, what barrel length gives you the best ballistic performance from the 9mm round? 16" is stock, I was planning on going to chop down to a 11.5" to 12" but then got to thinking about staying stock. Ive got zero experience with this platform, so whats the deal, stay stock or go shorter? |

The 9mm will not lose velocity when fired from a 16" barrel. Now, it does not lose a whole lot if you drop down to 11.5", but it is certainly not going to lose any velocity. Quickload shows this very well in their graphs. I have also confirmed it empirically with several carbine, pistol and subgun barrels. The same is also true for the .45 ACP. |
| I bought a CMMG 14.5" 9mm upper with permanarny flash hider and am well pleased with it in every way. Being 16" overall length I did not have to get the SBR permit and the delays and government probing associated with this. Anf it really is handier than a 16" barrel like on my 5.56 (223) AR15. Velocity is good with the longer barrel and I can plink at targets out to 200 yards quite effectively. This carbine (Colt style) is totally reliable with CCI Blaze ammo, WalMart purchased Winchester ammo, Ammoman Winchester 9mm NATO spec ammo, CCI Lawman ammo and everythingelse I have fed it. IM me if you want carbine details as I built the lower from scratch (all new stuff) and ramped the bolt myself. |
