Does the .45 Oly bolt use a standard bolt carrier? I'm considering grabbing a side charger upper, which use proprietary bolt carriers. Any reason the bolt won't drop in?

No, as illustrated below.

Oly .45 BCG on the right:

Oly .45 BCG on the bottom:

It's a blowback design, thus no gas key. I have no idea whether or not it would work in your contemplated application.

Someone on this site has a very early Oly .45 BCG and it is made from a standard AR carrier. Not sure what all the mods are needed to make it work. I suspect grinding the lower of the bolt carrier to match the .45 bolt and the addition of a weight in the rear.

Why not just cut the slot for the side charger handle in the Oly bolt carrier? I had one customer do this with a VM side charger I drilled for the Oly ejector.

I may just have to do that. The side charge uppers use a different gas key, maybe that could be swapped to the oly carrier. What kind of slot neets to be cut in the carrier?

My experience with side chargers is limited to what i can see on the internet, which is very little. I just thought it was a cool idea, the way subguns were "meant to be".

If this whole thing takes off, the SCU may be a down the road, long-term type project.

ETA: Thanks for the info, I'm still on the fence about the project, but this helps.

The standard Oly AR carrier is the top one made early 1990's.
grinding the lower of the bolt carrier to match the .45 bolt and the addition of a weight in the rear would be all.

Now I'm confused, so I'll rephrase the question:

What would have to be done to make an oly .45 bolt and carrier work in a side charging AR upper?

Thanks again for the info, photos and patience.

If you're talking about the ASA or AMEETEC side chargers, you'd have to mill a slot in the side of the carrier to mate with the charging lever. Maybe you could get ASA to slot your carrier for a small fee.

Side charging uppers do not use proprietary bolt carriers. They are standard carriers with a small slot milled into the left side for the charging handle to catch on. An Oly .45 bolt carrier needs the slot cut into to work. The companies that sell he side charging uppers do offer the service to modify your bolt carrier.

Perfect, thanks. Exactly what I needed to know.

I figure since it's a vanity project anyway, I might as well make it as cool as possible. And really, shouldn't a "sub-gun' be a side-charger? Even if semi-auto?

I suppose I'd need the upper converted to the Oly extractor setup, too...

Just a question, BUT WOULD THE SIDE CHARGING SETUP INTERFERE WITH THE OLY EJECTOR MECHANISM?

I don't know the answer my OLY upperm is on order as is my MGI lower. I'm an FAL fanatic and I like the idea of the side cocker too.

No, as you can see in the picture posted by Bob332, the 2 holes drilled for the Oly ejector are just to the left of the bolt stop.
