I just received an Olympic Arms 9mm upper I bought here off of a fellow Arfcommer. The upper came with a bolt style like I have never seen before. The bolt consists of a standard nutered SP1 style carrier with a non rotating 9mm bolt head complete with gas key and cam pin. All other Olympic style bolts I have observed were very beefy and tried to add weight to every possible surface with few cuts and a weight screwed into the rear of the bolt. This one appears to have ben cut to reduce the weight as much as possible, even the bolt head appears to have the top shaved off. On the left side, the carrier is stamped SE in a box with corners that round inwards giving the box 8 corners instead of 4. I guess my question is, when did Olympic use this style bolt and will it hurt my lower to run this bolt? I have a 9mm buffer in my lower which worked well with my two previous 9mm uppers. Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, BigHunt |

I have 3 differant Oly.9mm. one is about 17 years old, one around 10yrs. and newest about 3 years old. All the carriers are all differant to a degree. You can't really talk to the one dumbass young fella there as he does'nt know squat on there older products and will give you some line of B.S. THAT THEY NEVER MADE SUCH A THING. The oldest one I have came with an olympic mag block like the Socom block and the back of the Sten mags were drilled and tapped with a 3/16 th. socket head screw inserted for the mag catch. Really a far better set up than welding square tubing on a magazine. All my carrier assemblies will interchange and function. Only 2 have weighted carriers. |
Jason, I have a camera, but I don't think I am technologically savvy enough to post pics. It appears to be a standard SP-1 style carrier with a non rotating bolt head. The seller LODENBKWIK said it was an Olympic upper. It is a 16" HBAR with an A2 upper in no ban configuration. |

last time I called was 2 years ago asking about the old ejector springs that had 2 coils instead of the newer ones, they look almost identicle. The fella said they never made such a thing! I then told him the rifle was fairly old, about 15 years old and what type mag block it came with and how the Sten mags were held in with the socket head screw. I purchased this as a complete rifle new that the FFL ordered from Oly. Arms. Tle lower is clearly marked. He then replied they never made such a set up. At that time I realised he did'nt know shit, at least about there older rifles. My 2nd. Oly 9mm came with a 10 rnd clear plastic magazine and NO Socom type mag block. The last one I purchased from Atlantic Firearms came with a Sten mag with the square tubing welded on the back. |

Jason, The upper is marked EK. I purchased everything in the picture above except the lower. I haven't tried the lever or push button finnish style loader because I have an aluminum "Austen" ring type loader that is the gold standard as far as sten mag loaders go in my opinion. The lever loader appears as though it would work pretty well while I don't think I would care for the push button loader very much. I have encountered two problems with the upper now. The mags seem to set too far up into the mag well and are hitting the bottom of the bolt causing misfeeds. I ground .040'' off of the mag block lever and, the problem seems better but not solved. Also the plastic end of my RRA 9mm buffer is mushroomed out enough it is catching the spring during the recoil stroke leading me to believe that the bolt is indeed too light. |
Jason, he is referring to the guys that answer the phone at OLY. Darin |
And this helps how? Or is it an offer to buy him a new setup? Anyway, BigHunt a 9mm bolt from Oly will fit into a standard 556 carrier. I just tried it. So it could be that the 9mm carrier was damaged or broke and it was changed out at one time. Does the bottom of the carrier match the bottom of the bolt or does it match a 556 carrier? ETA: I had the SOCOM block, I dumped it due to feeding problems. I now use and suggest to others the Hahn top loading mag block. Haven't came across any sten mags that won't work in my Oly 9mm setup. |

BigHunt. If the one in the picture is yours it looks like the oldest preban type I own. I noticed some of the Sten mags look to have the small socket head screws installed for the mag catch? If the mags are rideing to high and hitting the carrier someone may have located the holes for the screws to low on the mags causing them to sit high. |
Good catch! I didn't even notice that when I looked at the photos! |
