People keep telling me I would need to use a 9mm hammer if I want to build a 9mm AR. But let me ask this question If I build a 9mm from the ground up using a bolt carrier from an olypmic arms system and the upper from Rock River keeping the lower with a standard AR 223 hammer will this work. Reason being I want to be able to switch between 223 and 9mm and not have to change the hammer. I'm not a big fan of the Olymic arms mag system that's why I want to use the Rock river upper. I have been told many differnet things from I will get full auto fire and I will be in Jail for violating some laws and this will egg out the pins in my receiver. From what I understand about this is the bolt carrier needs to be ramped in someway to avoid the hammer riding it. Is the Olypmic bolt carrier different then the standard 9mm bolt carrier. Please help me clear this confusion.

Why would you use an olympic bolt?

Just ramp the RRA bolt and you are good to go.

The Olympic 9mm system and the RRA 9mm system are different in design. The RRA 9mm system is the standard Colt system and there is a good choice in ready-to-use mags for this setup. If your 9mm is a secondary setup and just used for plinking, target shooting and small game, all you need to do is get a standard DPMS .223 hammer part # LR-33.

DPMS's hammer does not have the little step in the top edge that causes Colt style 9mm bolt to get hung up. I've put tons of ammo through my non-ramped 9mm and it is just fine. the ramp is really needed when you have a full-auto setup where the full-auto bursts really hammer the fire control group. Get the RRA 9mm upper parts and get a DPMS .223 hammer and you should be good to go.
