So for those that run a string from the follower and out the floorplate to ease reloading, where did you attach the string to the follower? I think I drilled mine a little too close to the rear since I got a lot of first-shot nose-diving rounds unless I jiggled the mag just right to seat the cartridges properly. I used one of the core yarns from a length of paracord and an old key ring, it definitely takes the strain off your thumbs.

I put probably 300 rounds through two BDM 10rders today using Rem Golden Bullets, most of the failures seemed ammo related rather than mag related.

I never had much luck with rem golden bullets, when they are crimmped the lead portion seems too large to chamber free. I threw the calipers on a handfull and they are as big as .250, thats a press fit.

Punani,
I would love to get help with the upward FTE issue.  I want to get this gun to run with the BDM's.  It is a Colt 614 full-auto with Ciener kit.

I can't PM you, every time I try I get an error message

Punami - Unless you have some reason for wishing to keep your fix for the upward ejection jams private, I'm sure I'm not the only one here who has experienced the same problem and would enjoy trying your fix.

Would you kindly post it for all to consider?

Thanks.

I just want to post a big +1 for Kevin and Black Dog Machine.  I had a problem with a BDM magazine (I own several and this is the only issue I've had) last weekend at the range and e-mailed Kevin.  Within hours I had a reply and an offer to replace the magazine.  On Monday I dropped the magazine in the mail - by Friday a new magazine was in my mailbox along with a small freebie.  This kind of customer service is rare - and the reason why anyone who is on the fence about buying a BDM product should dive in with confidence.  It's a quality product and a quality company, and BDM will get more of my business in the future.

I had the conversion out at the range last weekend to zero the EOTech, with the following results:

For those of us who split our time and shooting between restricted and non-restricted mag capacity states, is it possible to convert the 10-rnd mags back and forth (i.e un-pin it, then re-pin it?) or is the modification permanent?

It is a post molded on each half of the magazine preventing the follower from moving downward, you even have to disassemble the magazine to remove the follower for cleaning. A dremel would remove the post easily, but it would not be replaceable.

Put about 250 rounds through my new kit today. No malfunctions of any kind.  This combination is seriously fun.

It would have been nice it it were more accurate but for plinking it rocks.

ETA:  Ammunition was Federal Bulk from Wal-Mart.

Hey everyone.  I ordered the ciener kit and 2 BDM magazines yesterday (one clear the other smoke) from ballistic sounds (they seem to be the only ones with the ciener kits lol).  I've been hearing great things about these magazines in this thread, plus they look cool as hell too.  I don't have my rifle yet, but will be getting it built soon.  I noticed a lot of people in here say they're using Federal ammo.  I have a 550rd box of Federal value pack I got from walmart, is this the ammo that they are referring to?

I tried a white box of winchester in my walther P22 a few months ago, and it jammed up almost every other round, but after reading some posts in this thread, I saw some people say that some ammo was kind of loose in the casing.  I noticed the winchester ammo did feel a little loose.  The Federal doesn't feel the same way, it's a tighter feeling round, but I can spin the bullet around.  I'm hoping this will work better in my P22, because I don't want to pay the extra money for subsonics or more expensive ammo (this box of Federal was like $9.84).

Hopefully someone can shed some insight on which ammo works well and which ammo doesn't (from what I've read, I'm assuming I should stay away from the Remington golden bullets).  Thanks for any help you all can provide.

Only you can determine what works well in your kit.  However, it appears that the Federal bulk consistently works well and the Remington does not.  This is odd considering that the user manual recommends Remington brand.

I went to a .22 shoot yesterday... came with four mags, ended up putting a brick of Blazer and a half-brick of WWB through it before the Ciener started complaining.  Excellent!

The only problem is that a round became wedged in one of the mags, now I have to take it apart  Link to instructions?

My review of the BDM magazines are limited to only one. Used for the first time last friday and for the last visit yesterday. I put a total of 1500 rounds easy through it and had no malfunctions from the mag itself. Worked great . I also purchased it from Kblagg at Ballistic Sounds, ordered two more yesterday and will buy some more later in the month. My ciener kit has become my favorite shooter in the last three days and the one BDM I have helps keep me at the firing line instead of the reloading table

I got my mags (1 smoke and 1 clear) plus my ciener kit today.  Everything looks good, and the mags look badass.  Can't wait to get my rifle built so I can put them to use.  I did load one of them up, but I could only get like 21-24 rounds in.  The spring was too hard at that point.  Anybody have any suggestions on what to do?  I think these already have the shorter spring, and they also have the red followers too.

Sometimes the spring gets hung up on the bottom spring guide and when that happens, only 21 rounds will fit.  Push up on the little takedown pin and it frees the spring.  However, I also noticed that I can still only fit a maximum of 24 rounds.  I tested 4 of our 8 magazines and they are all like that.  It does not bother me though.  As long as they're reliable we're happy and we haven't had a single malfunction yet.

BTW, I modified a USGI 30 round magazine follower to function as a loading tool.  It works pretty well too, but care is needed to avoid wearing the feedlips.

I just got two more of the BDM's for the ciener kit. Used up a box of 550 rds Remington with no problems. Having three of them now really makes shooting this kit fun and easy. Will buy more of them for sure now. Wished there were some dark green/olive drab versions.
I did have a Kaboom the other day while using one of my BDM,s and it showed no signs of damage. Other than being covered in soot, residue. Cleaned up and kept feeding as intended.

I did some changes to the gen 1 mag and ran 250 in smoke today. The changes include making the feed lips .015 thicker per side, lowering the lockup .020, opened up the shell pickup slot and added some material in the center to help guide the round into the chamber(like we did with the m261 mags) We are testing now in several kinds of the glass filled material and when I find the one I like we will run a batch of 250 and see how it goes. With the red follower in they hold 32 rds.

I took my modified-ciener kitted AR to the shooting range on Saturday for some more...ahem..."testing".  About the only thing that worked well for me with the .22LR setup was the BDM full-body magazines, but they were flawless.  I have the newer ones with the red-colored follower and retainer, with the radius on the ends.  Mags loaded easily to full capacity and I had no feed-related jams or other mishaps related to the magazines.  Still working getting the correct recoil spring length so it will function better with that weak-@$$ Federal Bulk Pack.

The BDM ciener magazine is a great product which I highly recommend.

You shouldnt have to do anything unless your kit needs a little polishing. Most run great right out the box, some need a little atention. I have seen bent rails, rough surfaces and burrs.

A modified ciener kit is simply a regular kit which has had its chamber insert replaced with a breech adapter, allowing the use of a "dedicated" .22LR barrel, such as sold by Model 1 Sales.  These seem to be more feed-sensitive than a standard ciener kit used with a regular 5.56mm barrel, but are theoretically more accurate as well.  I like the concept of the dedicated .22LR barrel, since the .22 slug doesn't have to "jump" the length of the chamber adapter before hitting the barrel's rifling.  A dedicated .22LR barrel will also be the proper inside diameter and have the proper rifling twist, both of which are different in a 5.56mm barrel.

None of this has anything to do with the BDM magazines; they will work with standard and modified ciener kits.

What do you guys think about my idea for a last shot hold open follower? A few reasons why I want to do it, no dry fire on a empty chamber- a leading cause of broke firing pins, with the bolt held open you can visually see your chamber is empty- bolt closed means a DUD still in there and just plan safer. By the way I have some pics and info on a new .22 AK mag for the WASR .22's in the AK  romainian thread. Good stuff!

I would buy some to retrofit my magazines too; sounds like a great idea!  Speaking of firing pins, any chance you might still come out with an "improved" ciener firing pin?

I broke in my Ciener and BDM full size mags with about 230 rounds of CCI Minimags yesterday.  Out of 230 rounds the system went click instead of bang four times, and each time the round was fully chambered and there was a nice indent from the firing pin, so I blame the ammo (its about 13 years old, what can I say, I stockpile .22).

I just gave the Ciener a little CLP at the beginning and a very small amount during a break in the middle of the session, and she ran like a top.  I can't believe I finally found a reliable semi auto .22.

I would say yes they are more durable, 30% fiber glass filled nylon. I was doing some drop tests and no failures. The skinny smoke mags have .015 per side of extra material on them, I cleared out the back for the shell pickup clearance and added a shell guide in the center, it will guide the rim straight until it chambers. Starting now all the followers will have the last shot bolt hold open installed. I also made some 18% glass filled polypropolene mags as a test, they are very durable and in a darker grey, color came out great and they preform good too. I only made 250 black glass and 200
of the poly pro. The color makes no difference with strength.

I think it would be great to have a hold open feature on your mags.  i wish you could incorporate this on the Colt/DPMS high capacity mag.  If you could do that you would definately be a miracle worker.   I peened the barrel on my DPMS ap4 barrel and have broken 1 firing pin.  Any word on the development of a high capacity mag for Colt/DPMS kits?   Looks like you got several products in the works Kevin.  i seriously thought about buying a Romanian 22 AK but didn't because of the mag situation.  If you develope a mag for the 22 AK I'll have to buy the rifle and your mags..............lol
