This is my latest .45 upper build. This one was a pain in the ass. I had to cut the front sight base off which also ruined the front hand guard cap in order to install a YHM flip up front sight base. Because the FS is permanently mounted, I had to open up the hole on another front hand guard cap in order to slide it on. I took a short piece of gas tube and installed like normal to keep the hand guard cap from rotating and to keep it centered on the barrel since the center hole is now larger. Worked out great but took some brain storming.

I held the upper receiver in a clamshell vice block to install the barrel so I couldn't mount the shell deflector until after I installed the barrel. DAMN! Now I couldn't intstall the port door pin as the delta spring assy was in the way. I could have installed it in backwards but then it looks bad sticking so far out. So, I took the "C" clip off the pin and installed it from the opposite side, then reinstalled the "C" clip that holds it from coming out. Again took a little brain storming.

Sounds like 'the build that wasn't meant to be'!

Bill,
I ran into the same problem you did on my first upper build with installing the shell deflector after the barrel was installed. I also removed that teeny tiny c-clip. Since then I modified my clam shell block so that it would work around the shell deflector. It will still work with the standard uppers.

That maybe true. I've gotten a lot of request for some unusual combination and all for a gun not designed to shoot past 100 yards. Oh, well, the customer gets what the customer wants. Priced accordingly though.

Roger that.  I'm not afraid to mention I'm putting a LaRue FF rail on mine

I am glad I bought that two pin receiver vise block back when though!

TC, Do you do any 45 gas uppers?

No gas uppers, mine are all blow back. MGI is doing a gas upper for their grease gun magwell conversion. Marty at Teppo-Jutsu may have done one.

Thanks, I am waiting on MGI to complete their 45 stuff, just wanted to see if there was anything else out there.

What is the attraction for a gas upper vs blowback?

Maybe a lighter bolt carrier and definitely less carbon in the gun.

The front sight is permanently mounted?

After your ordeal, would you have any suggestions on methods for removing it in the future?

Aside from "don't."

The FS is permanently mounted so the only to get the stock FS base of is dremel it off. No way to get the rear boss cut without damaging the HG cap as well. I'd do this again if someone wanted one, but it does require a 2-pice front sight base and a new HG cap.

I agreed to do it before I realized the FS was permanent. DOH! Had a heart attack for about 20 minuteds till I figured out it could done. Had another heart attack when I boogered up the HG cap , then I remembered I had an extra one.

It does have the cool factor of being the onlu CAR barrel I've ever seen with a filp up front sight.

LoL. I just need to evaluate custom projects more before I commit. I completely forgot about the permanently attached FS whne I said I could build it. DOH! I like the looks of it and it does make it more modular.

Enjoy.
