I did a search and found a couple of posts making reference to DPMS redesigning their .22 uppers and also starting to make high-capacity magazines.  Does anyone have details or a time-table for the new release?  Will the new version have a bolt hold-open?  Prices? Will any parts in the lower need changing to swap from a 5.56 or is it a true plug-and-play upper swap?

Thanks

i was going to buy one of their 22 AR rifles but they said they had Extractor issues and were re engineering the part.  at the time they said they hope to have a solution the later part of this year.

Instead of getting some possible second hand info, why dont you call them.  thats how i got my info.  they were pleasent to talk to and were happy to answer my questions.

I shot them an e-mail and haven't heard back yet.  I was just wondering if anyone on the board had some "inside" information.

Thanks

The DPMS is not very good at replying those emails about the.22lr uppers. I mailed them about my junky piece of ***** 14th of july got one reply three days later. Then I waited for further information for two months and got frustrated and mailed them again, but nothing so far...
It would be nice if they would reply...
AND it would be even nicer if they would provide spare barrel, some spare extractors, safety goggels and righthanded glowes for the KA-BOOM's that happen every now and thenSo call them ,don't mail them. The service is very friendly and Jason and Sahne at least are very nice and polite guys.

As of the gunshow last week (DPMS was there).  About 4 to 6 months yet for the uppers.  Proto type is built and is being tested.  So it looks like it will be a while yet.

Thanks,

IMHO the only thing DPMS needs to "redesign" about their .22 is they need to come up with a chamber that's both tight enough to give great accuracy but loose enough to avoid the out-of-battery kabooms, which is what blows out the extractor. Aside from one of those kabooms (caused by oversized ammo that also wouldn't chamber in a couple of my other rifles, but worked fine in the rest), I have been extremely happy with my DPMS M4 .22 unit. It has been one of the most accurate and reliable .22 rifles I've ever owned.

Does there seem to be any ammo manufacturers known for kabooms in the DPMS units?  I shot bullseye for almost 10 years and never ran into any oversize ammo issues.  I shot mostly CCI-SV, Winchester T-22, and some higher-end target rounds like RWS.

IIRC Stingers were involved in quite a few, but it wasn't ammo-specific.  The root of the problem is that there's no interconnect to keep it from firing with the bolt partly open, so anything that impedes full chambering of the round can cause a KB.

The more expensive ammo you shot Bullseye with was probably held to better tolerances than the buck-a-box bulk ammo and didn't have oversize bullets, but if the chamber was looser you wouldn't know it if it did.

I don't know what DPMS is doing in their redesign, except maybe beefing up the extractor or shaping parts to deflect the gases better.  Maybe a stronger recoil spring would help it close.  On my Ciener the firing pin spring seems to be strong enough that the hammer closes the bolt the rest of the way and causes a light strike instead of a KB, but I've heard of Cieners KBing too.  At least their mags are metal and usually survive.

I'm confused (nothing new there, but) -- is this a bolt re-design or chamber re-design or ???  I'd like to get a hi-cap mag for my upper, but if it will only work with the new uppers, I guess I'm sunk.

They absolutely guarantee that they'll have a .22 rifle and high caps in before the second coming of Jesus.

Seriously, we've been bugging them for 2 years about this, they keep saying in 3-6 months...

I've moved on, screw 'em.

They have the hi-cap magazines listed in their catalog.
P/N MA-25.
I tried to find them on their website, but had no luck. Maybe I was looking in the wrong place.

At 1 point I believe they were taking oreders, but somehow that deal feel through because it "wasn't 100% reliable."  Who cares, sell 'em and I'll make the damn things work in my gun.........

It says that the hi-caps will work in the Colt conversion kit. Thats the reason I was interested in them.

Has anyone tried to make a longer ( 20 round ) Mag by combining two mags together?
10/17/2006 6:58:57 AM EDT
[#19]
OK, I just spoke with Jason at DPMS (parts dept.) about this hi-cap mag issue.  The story is (at least today) that the new hi-cap mags will be compatable with the "older generation" uppers that everyone already has, so no concern there.  He was hush on the redesign for the .22lr upper/bolt.  Still no word on release date.

FYI for those in the know.

Meanwhile, anyone have some extra 10-rounders they want to get rid of?

Well my DPMS 22lr went kaboom today and blewout the right side extract. Will be calling Jason Monday morning.

Same thing happened to me the very first day I shot mine. You have to keep the chambers clean on these things, and make sure that your ammo isn't oversized. Since that annoying first day kaboom, I have fired thousands of rounds through mine with NO problems or malfunctions of any kind.

I've got about 4000 rounds through mine now with no kabooms.  I clean the chamber after each range session (about 150 to 200 rounds).  I've been using Federal Champion bulk pack, Winchester Wildcats and Federal Champion 40 grain (replacement for the Federal Lightning).

What kind of ammo were you shooting??

Thanks

Brad

My kaboom happened with Fed Walmart Bulk. It was a bad box--they wouldn't properly chamber in a couple of my other rifles, either, though I did eventually shoot them up in something. No further problems with that ammo since. Whenever I open a new box of bulk ammo for the DPMS, though, I am VERY careful about how the first mag's worth chambers and functions. (My kaboom happened on about the third or fourth shot after opening a new box of them.)

Kabooms have been reported with several different brands.

I asked DPMS that earlier this year (Feb or March).  I was told that yes they would, though there were no details about how it would work.
