I recently purchased a DPMS .22LR upper off the EE.  This is my first experience with any .22LR upper for the AR.  However, I noticed you cannot close the dust cover.  There is no place on the bolt for the raised point on the cover to fit into.  Are they all like this?  Can I mill out a slot?  Or should I just leave it alone?

Yes.

No.

Leave it alone.

Thanks.

Do any of them have a bolt hold open?  Does it hurt to dry fire?

That's what I'm assuming too.  I guess that means I have to count shots.
