I'm guessing not, although I've always used one. I'm in the process of a new build and am trying to figure out if I need to pick up another. I'm going to add a poll for those with experience. BTW - 9mm Colt system, M4 carbine stock. Thanks. |
|
Quoted: Often not needed on a new gun. May be helpful in reducing cycle speeds and improved extraction in guns that have been shot awhile and have eroded carbine gas ports. Quoted: Gas ports on a 9mm? I think he is refering to using the 9mm buffer with the standard 5.56mm system. |

Run a few thousand rounds thru a light buffer and let us know how it goes. Blaze a new trail down the beaten path. I recommend running the 9mm buffer in your M4 stocks 100% of the time. They work well in 5.56mm and I have been running one in my rifle for over 5 years with zero issues. |
| Question is too broad. A real 9mm buffer (2 pc mechanical) or other heavy buffer is needed in a CAR stock if running full auto. Any 223 buffer can be used for 9mm if a full length stock, including running full auto. Any buffer (including the solid 9mm buffer) can be used in a CAR stock if running only semi. |
SemiAuto using a Carbine length stock was specified in the opening post, I couldn't put all the info in the poll question. There wasn't enough room. I was not clear about which 9mm buffer I was referring to. I have used an RRA buffer on another rifle with no problems. If anyone has suggestions that point to another buffer for Semi use, I'd love to hear them before I buy. Thanks. |
| I would think that the 9mm buffer would prolly increase velocity, on my M9 I have diff springs to adjust for diff ammo, the heavier the spring the more vel. I would think since the 9mm AR is a blowback gun it would be the same way, more force required to push more weight so better vel. but I dont know, mine is still somewhere in the US in a box. |

I run an A2tock assembly and a 7oz rifle buffer.... I dumped the guts, and installed a machined brass rod. I run a 9mm upper and (2) short 5.56 uppers on same lower... runs fine. I went to the heavier buffer since I like to shoot 9mm suppressed, the added weight stalls the movement of the bolt, thus less debris out the eject port. Run something that mimmicks at least the weight of the std rifle length buffer at 5.2oz, screw those lighter weight buffers. |
Thanks for the info, this one will also be suppressed. |

Well, got to the range the other day. The 9mm buffer hasn't arrived yet so I thought I'd test out the 556 buffer. I ran several mags through it using 147gr flat tip. The only hiccups all came with the same magazine, which seemed to sit a little low in the block. They were all FTFs. I took the round out of that mag and loaded them into another mag and all went well. My set up was a 4 inch suppressed barrel, hahn toploading mag block, Colt M4 stock, several different mags (South American, Uzi, etc). I did get the 9mm buffer today and installed it. When I get a chance, I'll take it out to the range also. |
