OK, I have a DPMS AR-15 upper. This rifle will only be used for paper punching. I'm trying to figure out, from all my scopes, which to put on it. Here is what I have: Mueller 4-16x50 Mueller 8.5-20x50 Burris FF2 3-9x40 Simmons Aetec 6-24x50 Considering that this will only be used for paper targets out to 100 yards max, what would you recommend that I use? |

I am not familiar with the Mueller scopes so the first thing I would do is rule out any scope that does not have adjustable parallax. Then, look at the size of the scope compared to the rifle if you want the rifle to look normal or feel balanced. I have never been much of a fan of the Simmons Aetec because I have never seen one that had a clear field of view from edge to edge. I know they say they do but the three my buddy has all have considerable flair around the edges of the scope. If the Burris has adjustable parallax that is the one I would go with. The power is right without being too overpowered for the 22. If you cannot see it at 100 yards with a 3-9x something is wrong. On my DPMS .22 I had a spare Bushnell Trophy Turkey Scope 1-4x (fixed parallax at 40 yards) laying about and put it on the rifle and damned if it has not worked out very well, although I do wish it had a high end of about 10x. The 40 yard parallax could be a problem if shooting at 100 yards but so far I have only shot it at 50 and less and I must say, not too shabby. Still, I see a Leupold 3.5-10 AO in its future. |

I picked up a bushnell 4-12 x 40 AO that I use on my .22. It's everything you'd ever need for 100 yards. previously I had a Leupold 6-18 x 40 on it, I thought it was just too much scope for that caliber. So out of you selections... I'd go with the Mueller 4-16, or Burris 3-9. You have the plain old 3-4x for use hunting or shooting up close, and can crank it up for shootin the X's at 100. IMHO |

Your Burris 3-9 will work fine. I have a real cheap Chinese 4x on my DPMS .22 and it's worked fine for me. No AO on it but I just haven't seen any problems and the combo is good for an inch or less groups at 50 yards. On my M261 gun I have a 3-9 and the 9 is all the power I need at 100. More than enough, really. |
