Hello Folks, I have a question about the differences between two different buffers that I haven't seen answered here. What are the fifferences between these 2 buffers? (both listed at Brownells) Colt: BUFFER ASSEMBLY, SLIDING BUTT STOCK FITS: AR-15 Carbine, 9mm; AR-15 Match Target Lightweight, 9mm (Brownells #231-000-039) DPMS:CAR-15 COUNTERWEIGHT BUFFER SPECS:Steel body. 3¼" (8.3cm) long. 5.4 oz. (155 g) wt. (Brownells #160-307-101) I have the one from DPMS and like it, but how does it compare to the one offered by Colt? Names aside, which would you chose? (BTW they are a dime difference in dealer price, so that is NOT an issue) Anyone know the weight and material of this particular Colt buffer from Brownells? The 5+oz. buffers make my standard 5.56 CARs feel like they run smoother; whether that is true or not, I don't know. Thanks in advance. Cheers, Otto |

I'll refine my question: Anyone know the weight and material of this particular Colt buffer from Brownells? The description doesn't tell me whether its an "H" buffer or steel or what... Colt: BUFFER ASSEMBLY, SLIDING BUTT STOCK FITS: AR-15 Carbine, 9mm; AR-15 Match Target Lightweight, 9mm (Brownells #231-000-039) Cheers, Otto |

Otto has the Brownell's part numbers reversed. All Colt parts in their catalog begin with 160 while DPMS parts begin with 231. #160-307-101 is, in fact a Colt 9mm buffer. I know since I got one from them when I put a 9mm upper on my M16. I'd just about bet that the DPMS buffer is simply the CAR version. |

Well the Colt buffers arrived today, and no they are not the same as the DPMS ones. The DPMS buffer I have is pictured by Osprey21, which Eagle20's pic calls the 2-piece hydraulic buffer (far left in pic), but the Colt part number references the second to left in the pic. Not the same (and yes, I had my parts numbers switched in the multiple copy&paste maneuvers writing the first post, sorry) I reposted the question to see if anyone had direct experience with that Colt buffer (Brownells #160-307-101): "The description doesn't tell me whether its an "H" buffer or steel or what...(or tungsten, 1-piece, 2-piece, 5.45 oz., 3.7 oz., 6.3 oz., etc)" As for:
I read that thread before asking my original question in the top post, and reread it again when it was linked. Odd how a search for "9mm buffer" pulls up the thread "9mm buffer use?". Searching independantly for answers before asking what could be a common question always helps too, I've discovered. As for the link: The link rambles for 2 pages on "why I run 9mm buffers in 5.56 CAR's" (which I mentioned in my first post, and attempted to eliminate from my second as a possible distractor) with a chart listing buffer materials and weights. Yes, techincally the Colt buffer was likely listed among the four (4) Colt 9mm buffers listed, but my original question could be rephrased as which one of the 4 Colt 9mm buffers listed was among the Brownells offerings? (Brownells description was vague as well -- the DPMS listing had a pic, the Colt did not. Hence my hotlinks to the Brownells listings so readers could see that. I posted links that were intended to be read as well) And secondly, is it like the DPMS one I purchased earlier? But, no, the linked thread did not answer my question (mispellings aside): "What are the Differences between these 2 buffers?" After the fact, the final pic from Eagle20 did. Thanks for the responses. Cheers, Otto |
