Hey all, I was wondering if you could help.  The range I currently shoot at most often is rimfire rifle only.  (Pistol any standard caliber, but no pistol caliber out of a rifle? I didn't make the rules)  Anyway, my build project has been stalled for a while, and I think I'd like to finish it up with a dedicated A2 configuration .22lr upper.

The cheaper than dirt catalog advertises a "DCM .22LR upper, with a 20 inch stainless barrel, made by DPMS."  There website has no record of this and indicates that the M4 and FF 'varmint' model are sold out anyway.

Does anyone know of a good source of an A2 style .22 LR upper?  Or since the ID of a .223 barrel matches with a .22 WMR cartridge better than a .22LR, does anyone make a .22WMR conversion kit?

Thanks,
Shawn

also: www.american-manufacture.com Mike does good work with barrel lining.  1/16 twist, .22 dia. More to follow in range report.  What are you going to use it for?

Thanks.  I'd use it for marksmanship practice at my current range, out to about 100 yrds until I have a place to shoot center fire.  Then probably as a source of cheap plinking fun.

So the american manufacture guy just converts your .223 barrel into the proper .22lr diameter?  And then you can add a Ciener (or some similar) conversion?  Hmmmm....

The Kuehl precision look pretty slick!  Kinda pricey though.  Is the quality that much superior to the DPMS?

Yes, Mike @ American Manufacturing does good work and he is a pleasant guy. I bought a cheap barrel mailed it to him to have it lined for 22lr. I shoot it with the Ciener conversion kit.
You don't have to worry about fouling the gas tube. Or you can just shoot a cheap barrel without the gas tube, if you are less worried about accuracy.

If you are going to have the barrel lined, make sure the barrel is not chrome. Also, only shoot 22lr (no 223) after lining it for 22lr.

You might want to check out Kurts Kustom Firearms (in the Industry section).  I bought a 16" A2 dedicated 22 upper from him in October of 2001.  Over 15,000 rounds through it, still runs like a champ.  You will need to use the Ciener Kit if you go this route.  Shooting the cheapest .22 I can buy I can easily knock over plastic bottles half the size of pop cans at 50 yards.

Good luck!  I love my dedicated AR, and shoot it more then my .223 AR's.

Ceiner conversion works well at pistol range target distances.  Not good with a 1/7 twist barrel, but 1/9 or 1/12 seems to work well.
