I got some South African 25 rd mags from Vector for use in my 9mm AR (2-piece Colt mag block). The mag fits and locks fine, but it will only feed reliably if there are 5-10 rounds in the mag. Any more, and the (unfired) rounds stovepipe. Here are some photos of the problem. The upper ones are with 12 rounds loaded. Notice that the top round is almost horizontal, parallel to the rear part of the feed lip. The lower pics show the mag with 2 rounds loaded. Notice the top round is angled up to match the forward portion of the feed lip. All 5 mags I recieved have demonstrate the same behavior. Any suggestions? Quoted: Feed lips could need to be shortened. The cartridge isn't allowed to feed into the bore so it flings up? Try one. I tend to think that shortening the feed lips wouldn't help because the rounds don't even touch the last 1/3 of the ramps (in the fully seated position). If I hand-chamber rounds, they go straight forward (instead of up and forward) until the mouth of the case catches on the front of the magazine. If I do it very slowly, the bolt just jams. If I let it go faster, the cartridge jumps up after catching on the magazine tube, misses the feed ramp almost entirely, and ends up vertical. For a lightly loaded mag, feeding is perfect. The bolt pushes the round up and out, right onto the feed ramp and into the chamber. The follower doesn't have much back & forth play, so there's not enough room for it to tilt horizontal. Somewhere in the stack of cartridges, the angle changes from that of the follower to horizontal. |
