I have already tried adjusting the front of the disconnector more to hold the hammer longer, but to no avail. Recut a second disconnector. still didn't help. Semi seems to be a common problem with AZR 3-position. In FRT runs great. Switched out FCG also with new M16 Selector and trigger with Colt hammer... no dice to fix the problem. No resistance or dragging while cycling the bolt and selector. At this point I doubt anything will fix the issue. I have not been able to replicate this issue w/ mine over the last few days. Hopefully yours gets sorted out. |

BTW, this happens in multiple lowers and uppers. I even cut a new m16 disconnectors like the supplied disconnector with limited better results, but still does't work correctly. See vid. Am I missing something? Why would you release the bolt with the trigger held back ? Was that added to the function checks? I’m asking because I don’t recall that in the function checks for the RB, the Disruptor, or the AZR. Also, does it work while firing at the range if you don’t drop the bolt with the trigger held back? If it was my gun and it works normally, I wouldn’t worry about this particular function. |

I just tested mine in the same fashion. My regulator does not release the hammer when I hit the bolt release while holding the trigger. There does appear to be a valid issue at hand. I’m still curious as to my previous question though. About the modified disconnector |

Why I did what I did... 1. The parts were installed as from the factory (correctly) 2. Function check done as instructions stated (passed function check, worked fine) 3. Shot on the range in SEMI (fires multiple rounds like FRT mode sporadically). Maybe every second or third attempt. 4. Shoots perfectly in FRT (3rd position) 5. Decided to try hold ing the trigger in SEMI and release the bolt to simulate firings (disconnector should hold). It malfunctions and lets the hammer drop. 6. From this thread took advice to file disconnector to allow it to hold hammer longer during the trigger release. 7. Bought and cut new disconnector to try and see if disconnector was the problem. Didn't fix the issue. 8. I have tried this AZR kit in three different lowers and five different uppers in various combinations. 9. I replaced disconnector springs (and yes installed correctly as all the other parts..built 100+ ARs in my life). 10. Video posted showing what is is doing is not normal of any SEMI FCG (Releasing the bolt while the trigger pulled is the same as a manual function check with just and added step of locking the bolt to the rear. It only allows the bolt to go home without the drag of the charging handle; However, it is enough to make the FCG in SEMI to malfunction. That was the point of the posting and my issue) I know some people have had issues with SEMI firing in FRT from the forums... I am looking for a fix for this particular AZR. |

Sounds like you’ve done due diligence. I honestly wouldn’t have thought of that. My AZR is working great, and I’m afraid to try holding the trigger and releasing the bolt. I went down the “light strikes on steel cased ammo” rabbit hole with 3 different FRTs, so I will sit this one out. Thanks for the detailed explanation. I hope you get it figured out. JD should take care of you but it seems that he can be an interesting individual to deal with. |

I know you said you tried different uppers and lowers. By chance, have you compared your available bolt carriers to see if the profile is different amongst what you have? I'd be curious to hear the results of trying a semi only carrier as that should not trip the FRT function or activate anything in the fcg when in semi. |
|
All four bolt carriers tested were M16-pattern carriers, and the trigger operates correctly in FRT mode with each of them. The issue occurs in SEMI mode. Occasionally, the trigger behaves as though it is in FRT mode even though the selector is set to SEMI. To be specific, the trigger passes a standard military-style function check when the action is manually cycled using the charging handle. However, if the trigger is held to the rear and the bolt is allowed to go forward using the bolt catch/release, the hammer follows and drops when it should remain retained until trigger reset. In both cases, the fire control group is still operating in what should be a SEMI cycle of operation. The only variable is whether the bolt is returned to battery via the charging handle or via the bolt release. Bolt Carrier used: (4) Colt, AO, Microbest, Unk. |

You are not the first person to report the AZR15-A1 apparently functioning like it’s in FRT-position when in fact it is in SEMI- position. I haven’t seen a good explanation as to why this happens sporadically and only for some people. As you have installed the kit in multiple rifle combinations, it seems unlikely to be tolerance stacking issue. It could be mis-installation, or it could be a defect in one or more of the AZR15-A1 parts, or it could be something else. Photos might help us diagnose the issue, but the problem may be too subtle. I’d suggest sending the whole kit back to JD and asking for a replacement kit, but as you have modified some of the parts he may not be willing to accept the return. Your other option is to buy a second kit and try that - if it works properly, you could start methodically switching out parts until you found the combination that is problematic. I’d understand if you were reluctant to do this. |
|
Yeah, I saw an other posts with people having the same issue in SEMI. Honestly I don't really like how the AZR works force resetting the trigger even in SEMI. The AS Design Super Safety I bought after this one is soooo much better. I will buy more of those and sell this P.O.S.. JB's emails and lack of a true guarantee to work (unless you mail your rifle in to his recommended gunsmiths) isn't a deal worth considering the price and function. The only reason I went with the AZR was the use of a true M16 Selector for the look and feel ( like my military days). It has been one big disappointment. The other options out there are getting Mil-Spec selectors now and even Datum Machine Works are =offering Mil-Spec selectors for various FRT models. The FRT world is really opening up possibilities. |
|
In SEMI mode, what prevents the hammer from falling if you are holding the trigger back? If I understand how the AR15 trigger works, its the disconnector holding back the hammer. So WHY is the disco/trigger not holding it back? If I remember from old threads, The AZR3POS still forces the trigger forward in SEMI but not enough to overcome the disconnector. Seems like yours is not holding. Also make sure the FRT Dingus leg isnt causing friction against the disco. That leg was made thinner than 2pos dingis leg to clear the 3pos disconnector tail. I could see it dragging the disco. Its hard to tell how the FRT device is interacting since it really isnt locked tight into position until you close the upper. |

@RoninRider ... I looked, but I did not find your Buffer Spring described. I am thinking an overly strong spring could enter battery with enough violence to dislodge the disconnector's hold on the hammer. It is probably just another straw up for grasp, but if you are running something more powerful than a standard carbine spring, try a lighter spring. |

To answer the recurring questions and eliminate variables, I have already tested the following: A2 buffer in an A2 stock exactly as shown/recommended on the Arizona Regulator website H1 buffer H2 buffer Kynshot RB5000 buffer The trigger functions correctly in FRT mode with all configurations, including the RB5000, which actually performs very well. The issue is isolated to SEMI mode. Intermittently, the trigger behaves as though it is in FRT mode while the selector is set to SEMI. At this point, buffer configuration does not appear to be the root cause. The trigger operates correctly in FRT and the malfunction has remained consistent across multiple tested setups. I’m not looking for random guesses — I’m trying to identify why SEMI mode is not functioning as advertised despite testing the recommended configuration and multiple known-good alternatives from someone who knows this system and has a solution. |

I'm one of the early guys with FRT mode in Semi and mine was fixed by moving it out of my Mk18 clone into my M16A4 clone. One was an Anderson lower (Mk18) and the other a PSA lower (M16A4). |

Gonna ask the crowd. Anybody know if the roninrider is using some sort of xp buffer spring? Been watching for days. If the buffer spring was ID'd, I missed it. But, I'm still certain he's an unhappy camper. And, I'm getting the feeling he figures the buffer spring doesn't matter. |

Sorry I thought everyone on this page was familiar with Arizona Regulator FRT and how it works. For those that don't know: PER AZR HOME PAGE: ARIZONA REGULATOR ® 3 POSITION FRT TRIGGER SYSTEM Remove your FCG and Selector Drop in the AZR-15A1 System Done Engineered for Proper Function in Mil-Spec ARs 5.56 - .223 - 9mm - 300BO - 7.62x39 No Gunsmithing - No Guesswork Requires Std FA BCG and (H3) buffer 5+ oz for 5.56/.223 or heavy 10+ oz buffer for 9mm. Weights must rattle inside buffer to replicate the OG Colt Mil-Spec. *** Some have great results using H2 with 5.56 or 8oz and a spacer with 9mm. If you have issues then use the OG Colt Equivalent. *** And to answer previous question, Rifle Spring in A2 stock with Standard Rifle 5+ oz Buffer (AS SHOWN IN VIDEO) also H2 , H3 Buffers in Carbine Tube with Standard Carbine Springs Using multiple Uppers and multiple lowers various makers (Colt, Tactical Machining, Black Creek, Colt/Alcoa, yada yada). I have several of the 3pos AZR. The one installed in a PSA H&R set up was firing frt in semi. The pocket in the upper was an issue, I had to open it up a little, but it still seemed more shallow than other uppers. This AZR dry fired/function checked on other set ups just fine. In the H&R build, I needed to remove material from the end of the leg that contacts the trigger. A few swipes of the file at a time and test. I tested live fire since dry firing wasn't consistent. Once the frt went away on the semi setting, I polished the end of the leg and added grease. I remember seeing a post on the Reddit frt forum about the mini Kabuto, which has a similar leg contacting the trigger bar. Those always seem to need material removed too. If I swap this frt into another rifle with an AZR it only works in semi since the leg is too short to push down on the trigger (past the sweet spot). I've removed too much before on others and welded material back on the leg and recut it with success. |

gurn-blanston, Thank you for sharing your experience and insight. I believe I may have read your post—or someone else’s—about having to reweld the leg on theirs. I have already tried filing the front of the disconnector. It was set to maximum disconnector engagement, with enough material removed from the front that it lightly kisses the hook during firing. I even modified a new M16 disconnector to test whether geometry was the issue. It improved things slightly, but did not eliminate the problem. To rule out the fire control group entirely, I also swapped in a Colt hammer and trigger set, but unfortunately saw no improvement. At this point, I suspect the Regulator body or cam components may be out of spec. The unit fits perfectly in the upper pocket, and after testing with eight uppers from multiple manufacturers paired with multiple lowers, I find it hard to believe they are all somehow “out of spec.” My impression is that the design may simply be too finicky compared to other systems, particularly when cost is factored into the equation. |

Good read. I have been down the same road as you. I purchased it to use in a high shelf S&W SBR lower I have. It works great in the 3rd position. Unfortunately, in semi, it's the same. The only thing I haven't tried is shortening the AZR leg. I gave up and put it away for now until the frustration wears off. My arc fires have been flawless in some low shelf lowers. If you find something concrete, please let us know. |

alaskantinbender, Personally, I would not modify the Regulator itself. If material needs to be removed anywhere, I would rather take it from the trigger where the interface occurs — it is generally easier and less expensive to replace if needed. In my experience, some of the other FRT systems are simpler to tune than this one. At this point, I’m probably throwing in the towel on the Arizona Regulator and moving back to Super Safety–style systems, which have worked better for my needs and seem to be continually improving. To be fair, the Arizona Regulator functions well as an FRT. My frustration is specifically with the 3-position functionality. In my case, it has not performed consistently in SEMI mode as advertised. I understand some people’s solution is to simply remove it when they want to shoot SEMI, but for me that defeats the purpose of paying extra for a 3-position system. That said, I genuinely enjoyed reading the previous technical threads and learning about the design philosophy and intended operation of the system. I only wish I had come across more discussion about the reported SEMI-mode headaches beforehand, because I likely would have made a different purchasing decision. |

Same here, I won't modify the AZR 3 position unit. And as you said, it does work well as a full-time FRT. Unfortunately, no semi mode combined with a so-so stock trigger. I put in a 2-stage trigger for now. |

The early videos on AZR show him filing the leg of the device while ensuring a little play in the trigger as you retract the bolt, so I was no pioneer in that regard. I've bought a few AZRs from people that took too much off chasing functionality in geissele or other triggers, and I welded material back on and reshaped them to a 3 position profile and filed them and put em back to work with a regular trigger and a notched disconnecter. Honestly, if you are getting intermittent FRT in Semi, it will probably settle out and wear in after you shoot it more. The thing I like about the AZR is that if something breaks on the FRT part, you still have a completely normal functioning semi trigger, hammer, disconnector and selector. I've had issues with cassette types and that gun is a paperweight when something broke or bent. |

One thing I read after the fact that it could be almost bump firing itself. At the time I was checking new loads and was very focused on groups so it may have been doing that. |

My gut is telling me that there are two options causing issue. One is there may be internal issues with the AZR itself. Rare but a possibility. Two is you are having a spec issue somewhere. Possibly that the bolt may be causing the hammer to engage back enough once slammed forward upon releasing the bolt catch. Possible throat depth issue or some hammer/disco/spring/trigger pin stacking. I saw this video on one of my friends YT you responded to and I was kinda miffed about what was going on. We tested all of our units and could not replicate what you are seeing. I don't feel you are having the same issue as most that are seeing multi's in semi. I didn't read this whole thread since you chimed in so I'd like to ask did you try the AZR in anyone else's set up? |

I have a SIG Copperhead-K MPX 9mm SBR that I was running with a RB 3P. I never got better than 90% reliability and the trigger beat my finger up like Will Smith slapping Chris Rock, so I pulled it out - parts breakage in a MPX can really suck due to limited availability of replacements. Last week I decided to try my spare AZR 3P in it. I really had no expectation it would work, but yesterday much to my surprise after five semi rounds to test I flipped it to spicy mode and went through the remainder of the 200 rounds I had with me with absolutely no problems - no trigger slap, no dead trigger, nuttin’. The gun has a PMM trip, original springs and a ILWT reduced gas plug. Today I pulled the gun apart to clean and inspect and discovered I’m one of the people who gets peening. I suspect the upper pocket is a smidge too far forward, not enough to affect function but sufficient to get a little interference. I’m not sure if it will wear to a certain point and stop but I’m tempted to take off some of the hammer hump, refinish the parts to show future wear and see what happens. Sound about right? This thread is quite interesting to me as of today, since by some interesting circumstances I have both an A1 and A2 AR FRT setups to try out. I know ZERO about FRTs, and my gunsmithing skills are about the same. One thing I do have is that I live close enough to AR that if I have problems, I can just drive up there.
I intend to try this in my SBR, which started life as a PA-15 pistol. Everything in it is factory stock. I am told I have to find a milspec H3 buffer, which the local shop has sporadically. The guy who answered the phone said everyone is buying the H3 buffers due to the popularity of FRTs. I can wait if they run out again. I tried putting the drop in unit in my old Trash Panda, which is a PA-15 lower and an Aero upper...I think I did something wrong, because the upper wouldn't close enough to let the pin back in. I didn't have time to really fiddle with it, had to boogie, and it isn't the rifle I am really wanting to try it in. What I found interesting is the gun shop guy said people were having issues with non chrome lined barrels wearing out very fast. Anyone have that issue? What is also going to be interesting is I have very little factory ammo, since I reload this caliber, so I wonder how many problems that might cause. It will also cause me to not do mag dumps - I know how much effort each round takes! Learning to control burst fire looks like it could be fun. This is, of course, a lark on my part for some fun, nothing more. |

So, instead of trying again with the Trash Panda, I used the SBR, because, why not. Now this is just the drop in unit, which, IIRC, simple turns it into an LMG of sorts with either safe or FRT functions. It was TIGHT fit in that upper, but with a little wiggling it went right in. It looks a little proud in the front in the picture, but that was after taking the lower back off, fit in perfectly. All I did was put it in, test the closing and re pinning of the upper and lower, then pulled it back out for now. Attached File I did not try it yet, still running the base carbine buffer that came with the stock kit I had the place put on the receiver when they engraved it, so might NOT work...might, don't know. I won't be able to get an H3 buffer right now, but soon. |

I know it's not a lot for some of you guys, but it isn't my only FRT. I just broke 1500 through my AZR 3-pos yesterday in my M16A4 clone combo. This one was ordered during the second exclusive batch from Team before the ban. It had previously had issues with FRT in SEMI in my MK18, but no issues in months in the 20" gun. ![]() Arizona Regulator in M16A4 #gwot |

I haven't had any issues with mine firing, but just a few issues with firing the correct mode.

So, I did everything you're not supposed to do. I just wanted to see if the thing worked, so I grabbed the SBR and some ammo, and when I dropped the wife off for her dental cleaning I boogied down to the local range. Attached File To be clear, this is a factory stock PA-15 registered SBR, with an AR Stoner carbine stock kit, including MagPul stock and a 3.04 ounce buffer. Not the ideal setup. By the way, that is my new Savior SBR bag, love that thing. Next, I didn't use factory ammo, but my own reloads. Oops. Attached File Attached File Now to be fair, these are loaded to 5.56mm standards, not .223, and that was by accident, just grabbed what was available in a hurry, didn't feel like digging. Besides, this is gonna be a few rounds and a dead trigger anyway. Attached File Yeah...nope. Everything worked perfectly. https://imgur.com/a/zjVowZX I only fired 60 rounds because my wife discovered her dental insurance had been canceled, so I packed up and left. I did fire 60+ rounds, all on FRT, since this is the drop in happy switch version, but with the standard buffer and reloaded ammo, it was fun. Now as a RELOADER, it almost pained me to see all that wastage, but the little kid in me was yelling like the baby in Dinosaurs, "AGAIN!" Now I did see a tiny bit of peening on the unit when I took it out, same place as mentioned above. Attached File All in all, it was fun, and this leads me to believe I could install the three-position Arizona Regulator FRT in this little carbine, whenever I get around to it. But I probably should still go get the correct buffer. |

Im probably at 1k rounds through my m16a4 with the az regulator without issues. |

Just another data point: I had one upper that simply would not work with the three-position Arizona Regulator with the same symptoms as your problem. I think it is a tolerance stacking, because it works fine with the 10 or so other uppers I tried. |
