| I'm fairly new to my new AR, it's a S&W M&P 15 Sport II, it has about 15 rounds through it. I shot two groups with Gorilla Ammo .223 and one group with a handload I just worked up on a whim, 53 grain SMK over 24.5 grains of 4064. Neither shot "great". But I'm wondering if I am focusing on my front sight, as the Gorilla shot consistently 3.5" and the handload was 3". I've been told that if you focus on the target instead of the front sight, your groups will be very sporadic. Mine aren't sporadic, they're just not great, but they are consistently in the same place. Is this average accuracy with irons off of front sandbags at 100 yards with irons? I obviously need practice, but I'm kinda discouraged. As I've heard they're supposed to be much more accurate than this. |
| The biggest cause of inconsistency in shot groups is your fundamentals. There are a number of great resources out there for you on the Internet. The Army marksmanship field manual is a great resource. I also have a free to download guide to marksmanship error on the blog section of the Green Eye Tactical website. Personal instruction can help as well. If attending a good fundamentals course isn't in your budget- check out local shooting clubs and groups. I also have about 8 hours of video on my YouTube channel that explains application of fundamentals like natural point of aim. |
| Brand new rifle with 15 rounds down the tube accuracy 3-3.5" @100 yards is not bad with irons. What irons ? factory stocks ones your in the ball park.It will take some shooting for all of the new surfaces to mate and get to know ea. other barrel included.Different schools of thought on break in for barrels. I shoot 5 clean until I have at least 50 rounds. I don't get it to hot until a few hundred.Your best accuracy will be with a scope or until you reach a level you could benefit from the high end match irons. They cost more than your rifle or pretty close and a good scope is significantly less. I have and use the Diamond Head front and rear iron BUIS sights and shoot pretty darn good with those.Hope this helps I think your rifles performs as expected may be a bit better than some. |
| Congratulations on your new rifle, what exactly are your goals and/or expectations? If your expecting a tact driver your rifle isn't exactly setup for that role, as stated before 3-4 moa is normal accuracy for rack grade. Not to say there is anything wrong with your rifle, I just want to make sure you have realistic expectations for your rifle. |

If the spread is consistent and you have no fliers, you're doing well. On a rack grade rifle you can tighten the group by 1) improving technique, 2) finding the ammo your barrel prefers, 3) improve the sight (get a scope--aim small to miss small), and 4) improve the trigger but you cannot make it a precision ~1 moa rifle. More like making a 4 moa rifle to a 3 moa rifle.
ETA you can always get a bigger gong |

Even standard issue rifles can shoot 1.5" groups with match grade ammo.
24.5 grains of Varget, RE-15 or N140 with 69 grain Sierra Match Kings. 23.5 grains of Varget, RE-15 or N140 with 77 grain Sierra Match Kings. 23.0 to 23.5 grains of H322 with 52/53 grain Sierra Match Kings. My Colt 16" H-Bar shoots 3/4" groups on my best days. Ball ammo, both M193 or M855 has been hideous from even my best rifles. 3" groups are common, sometimes worse. Quality ammo is a must for accuracy. |
| If you're shooting with open sights at 100yds the front sight is probably 3moa wide. If you're not using quality glass and have not installed a quality trigger you can't really know what the rifle is capable of. 3-3.5" with open sights is quire respectable I believe. Get a 100 rounds or so down the pipe before you decide just how accurate the rifle is. Most barrels need a little breaking in to start doing their best work. |

Hi Everyone, new to the forum today.
Quick question on what accuracy can I expect from my Colt LE6920 SOCOM M4A1. I purchased the Colt new last spring, topped it off with a Leupold VX-6 2-12X42MM Red Dot scope with a Leupold Mark 2 Integral Mounting System. Went to the range today to sight it in using Federal XM193AF 5.56mm Ball M193 55Gr.MC-BT ammunition that has been sitting in the basement for at least 10 years. Anyway, was able to keep my last 10 shot group fairly tight with 7 shots in about a 1/2" group, with three fliers opening it up to about 1.25" group. I know the rifle is much more accurate than me, but is this reasonable performance for the Colt @ 100 yards? Would include a picture of the target but haven't figured out how to enclose a picture! Thanks, Scott |
| The AR platform is a bit different than most guns you have probably shot, one of the biggest factors I have found is the quality of the ammo you are shooting, I can sit my AR's in a jig that I have for testing and see a wide variance on the accuracy of the gun based on the ammo, nothing changes in the mount of the rifle, but just changing ammo can make a big difference in point of impact on the target. |
