Hello everybody,
I am new to the AR platform and this site. I have been doing some research into ARs, and I think I've found a good deal to start with. At a local gun shop I found a DPMS MOE Warrior for $895.99, which looks like a good deal when I compare it to other places. DPMS' MSRP is $1159 This gun shop also has Black Friday deals coming up, so the price may even be lower. I see it has a chrome lined barrel, commercial spec buffer tube, and Magpul furniture. Would this be a good starter gun for the price? http://elementarms.com/product.dpms-moe-warrior-carbine-semi-automatic-223-rem556nato-16-desert-tan-magpul-moe DPMS rifles are/were made in my hometown, so I thought it'd be cool to get a rifle with St. Cloud, MN on it. However, if this is not a good gun to buy, let me know. Is there anything different you would recommend? My price range is $600-$900 Would I be better off building one? I would have to buy tools as well. Thanks! |

The 1:9 barrel twist will limit you to bullets of 69 gr. or less. Other than that, I like the rife. $900 seems a little pricey for a DPMS though. I have nothing against them (use their receivers for most of my builds, also barrels sometimes) but for about the same money you could get a, well,... sure fans of other makes will chime in soon.

If you want the DPMS because of the MN, sure go for it, but the JP is a more well regarded rifle. It's also more expensive.
Right now is a great time for AR's and there are many many many outstanding options out there for $900. Not saying I would never own a DPMS, but I wouldn't pay $900 for one right now. Colt, BCM, etc. You can buy an assembled lower (or stripped one and build it) and buy an upper online. As far as the 1:9 twist rate, it's true that it's not the perfect barrel for heavier bullets, but really, how often do you plan on shooting anything over 62 grain??? Cost goes up 2 - 3 x when you look at that kind of ammo. So if you'll only be shooting 55gr you'll be okay. Get what you want, but do your research and decide for yourself exactly what it is that you want. Like I said at the top, there are too many great options out there just to jump on the first $900 rifle based solely on the fact MN is on the roll mark. |
| $900 can get a much better rifle than a dpms that would also have a 4150 barrel, instead of 4140, and a mil spec 7075 t6 buffer tube rather than the 6160 t6. I would have to suggest a complete upper from BCM. They are of top notch quality and have one of the largest selections of lengths and configurations at different price points. A complete upper saves the added expense of tools and fixtures. The lower, on the other hand, could be gotten stripped and built up to your liking and only requires a couple basic tools to assemble. This will help get you acquainted with how the rifle operates. Good luck and welcome to the community. |

Here's two great options, first option requires the lower to be assembled by you (more fun IMO)
#1: http://palmettostatearmory.com/catalog/product/view/id/10445/ and http://palmettostatearmory.com/16-mid-length-light-weight-chrome-lined-premium-rifle-kit.html #2: http://palmettostatearmory.com/catalog/product/view/id/1213/ and http://palmettostatearmory.com/catalog/product/view/id/8555/ Then buy tons of ammo and mags. Good Luck! |
| For that kinda cash id get Psa around $600 with will full Magpul if that's your thing and spend rest on a used Aimpoint comp m2 sell for about 240 on ebay and seen a couple new ones for 279. But to each his own or the Ruger Ar 556 its a very nice gun for 550-630 I bought one also 4k rounds no a single jam with cheap steel ammo just some things to consider but any how congrats on whatever you get. |

BCM Makes great products, and you will learn about the rifle building your own lower. |

Remember that there is a federal 10% tax built into the price on all complete firearms. So would you like to pay an extra 10% on the entire $800, or 10% on just the stripped lower for $100?
Well built complete uppers are available all over (BCM, Spikes, PSA premium) and it's just two pins to a lower of your choosing. If you are not comfortable building a lower, there are preassembled lowers for $200-300 that will have better buffers and parts than the DPMS. |
