Just a disclaimer, I'm a noob when it comes to AR's.
Now that that's out of the way, I'm building a carbine length AR with a 16 inch barrel. I've read that the mid lengths are the way of the future for 16 inch barrels, but I wanted a plain jane carbine. The upper is a PSA mil-spec upper with an FN CHF barrel, and the lower is a PSA Classic upper. The lower already has a standard buffer spring and carbine buffer with the PSA logo on it. Is the standard spring and buffer going to beat my AR to death, and if so what's the best combo for this setup? Also, the rifle isn't complete yet. I'm still waiting on my BCM bolt and rear sight to show up. Thanks for any replies guys |

You may want to grab an H buffer (or an H3 buffer to make an H/H2 buffer out of your carbine/h3 buffer) just for fun/more likely to be reliable. I'd likely run an H2 buffer. |

Conventional wisdom is to use the strongest spring & buffer combo that will reliably lock back on an empty mag when using the weakest ammo you shoot regularly. Some experimentation may be in order.
I have 3 Colt 6920 lowers w/BCM 16" midlength lightweight uppers that are 100% reliable using H2 buffers and the Wolff XP spring when shooting PMC 55gr .223 (weakest stuff I shoot), one has appx 700rds through it w/o cleaning/lubing and still hasn't missed a beat. Tomac |
| A lot of it depends on what ammo you shoot and what size the gas port is. It should run on a wide range of ammo ok, but it'll have more wear on the extractor since so much gas is coming back into the BCG. Wouldn't hurt to get an H1 or H2 buffer to help slow down the BCG speed. |
| I would say it'll work fine. I have a M&P 15 sport that came to me bone stock. I then went from the stock buffer, tube and spring to a carbine length kit to support my MOE carbine stock. From the factory, the M&P15 sport holds a 3oz buffer, so this is the option I selected when ordering the carbine kit. I noticed now, I can feel the BCG hitting a little harder, and the brass extracts to the front, rear and side, rather just to the side as it previously did. I'll be order an H buffer to slow it down a bit. So this is something you can watch for to help determine if its g2g |
