I'm starting my first build and would like some pointers and suggestions from you seasoned AR 15 veterans..
I already have an Aero lower and upper.. Wondering on what barrel length I should use. My intentions for the rifle are just a range toy and zombie killer Thanks in advance to this newbie's questions |
| Welcome. Length? 16 inch. Anything shorter and you are into short barrel rifles and require the ATF, legal trusts or LE signatures, $200 stamps and long waits. Anything longer is the area of precision rifles ($$$) unless you're building an A2 20" clone. Besides, with a 16" barrel you'll have plenty of choices regarding profile/weight, gas lengths and finishes. Good luck with your build and don't be afraid to ask questions. |

Mid length gas is predominately accepted as the most versatile. I have all lengths but, for different applications. Those for general use are mid-length.
Barrel length is often debated. There are 20" barreled carbine gassed guns as well as rifle length gas on shorter barrels. A longer barrel increases velocity at the muzzle and beyond by the increased pressure that builds. A mid-length gas 14.5" or 16" is common and still get you out to 400 yrds without issue. The 14.5" barrels always need to have an extended muzzle device to make the overall length of the barrel 16". The shortest legal length of a rifle without having an SBR (short barrel rifle) stamp. |
