Hey everyone my name is Travis. I'm new here. Found this sight while looking around the interwebs looking for a good place to buy my upper and parts kit. This was my first build and my first AR15 so I wanted decent parts on a budget. I ended up going with a palmetto state armory 16" mock dissipator upper. I also went with their nickel bcg and charging handle as well as their lower parts kit. I went to my local gun store called Dragon fire armory and was going to purchase one of their lowers but they were all out. So instead I went with a Detroit gun works lower. Put everything together last night thanks to the tutorial on this site. I love it so far. Havnt had the chance to shoot it yet but hopefully I will soon. Oh yeah, chambered in 556. I'll put some pics up since I know everyone likes pics.

Now the only thing I'm wanting to change and I would like to hear some suggestions on this is the hand guard. I cannot stand the one that is on it. I'm wanting to go free float and Dragon fire armory has an awesome hand guard for about 230 but I'm not wanting to remove the front sight. I'd like to keep the sight because I like that it's on the barrel for accuracy. Also I'm trying to keep the cost down. I'm also thinking magpul but I'm not too sure on that either because I'm not too sure what size. I believe it should be rifle length but I've noticed that length can vary a couple of inches depending on manufacturer. What are some good decently priced handguards that don't require front sight removal? Thanks everyone!

Sweet rifle. Have fun with it. It should be good to go.

I'm pretty sure that Magpul will eventually extend their MOE SL line to include mid-length and rifle-length gas tubes.

Yeah, I'm a fan of the "SL".

Nice rifle and welcome to the site. Magpul does make rifle length handguards with their MOE line so that is certainly an option for you.

Thanks for the welcomes everyone. I'm leaning more and more towards the magpul hand guard but seems like most places are out of stock.

I made it out to the range this morning so I could fianly shoot this thing. It did great! I learned two things though. 1. Does not like federal 223. Seemed like every other round the primer wouldn't go off. Switched to zqi 556 and it loved it. 2. Need to buy some trigger/hammer pins that I can lock down and keep from walking out on me.

Here is a pic from the range. Wasn't really going for accuracy but mostly just making sure this thing would function.

Nice shooting

Based on what you said with getting FTF and walking pins tells me you may have installed the FCG parts incorrectly. Maybe snap a pic looking down into the opened lower at the hammer and springs?

Sure thing here you go. Hell I might of installed them wrong lol. No idea. Everything went in smoothly and operates.

Yep, at the very least, your hammer spring is installed wrong.  The "legs" should be comming out from under the hammer pin and back to rest on the trigger pin, not over the hammer pin as your pic shows.  This will cause light strikes on primers and also doesn't give enough tension on the trigger pin, allowing it to walk.

Alright d_man you were right on the hammer spring. Sure did have it just like the picture. Feels a lot stronger the right way. Thanks for the tip!

I sent you an email with a suggestion about a replacement for your handguards.

No problem, happy to help.  You failure to fire issues should be resolved from that fix.

Thanks everyone! I went ahead and ordered the magpul hand guard. Should be here Tuesday I believe. Should hold me over for now.

I do have a question. I'm looking to put an optic on this thing. I have no idea where to start. I took a look around the optics section and budget wise it looks like primary arms is the place to look. I just have no idea what I'm looking at or what I need. Only scope I've used is a 3x9x40 that I paid like 20.bucks for to put on my 22. Now I'm just looking for a simple red dot for $150 or under. Just going to use it at the range mostly but want to be able to clearly see out to about 200 yds If need be. What all would you recommend?

Primary Arms makes some good optics if you are on a budget. I've heard all good things about them on this site. Check out their Industry Page for some reviews on a few optics.

Thanks again everyone! My markup hand guard came in today. I like it. Defiantly makea it look a little beefier And I get a better grip on it. Going to order a angled grip for it sometime soon.

On with the pics

I'm already itching to do a really nice build

Much improved, IMO.

That is interesting to see a middy that has a A2 sight at rifle length.

Faux Dissy.

Flip the rear sight around and move it to the farthest rear notch.

Got to go out shooting again. Shot a couple hundred rounds and it performed perfectly. That hammer spring is what was giving me the problems.  Oh and I did flip that sight around. Wasn't sure if I installed it right the first time anyways lol. I am really happy with this gun.

Glad you are enjoying it & having fun.

Good job.

FYI, my front sight will remain on "Backwards".

Went to my friends house yesterday and did some shooting. Took a little family picture of our guns. Top and bottom are his two builds and middle is mine. Both of his are spikes tactical.
