I know how to clean my rifle, from the barrel to taking the BCG down completely.  My question is about oiling the exterior. I live in Southern California, it can be very humid and then very dry at times.

My question is about oiling the exterior of my rifle. I have a Daniel Defense V11. What is the current thinking on oiling the exterior of the aluminum upper and lower receivers?

And more importantly, what about the barrel exterior? My barrel is described as follows: Chrome Moly Vanadium Steel, Cold Hammer Forged, 1:7" twist, 16" Government Profile, Chrome Lined, MP tested, and Mil-Spec Heavy Phosphate Coated. Does this barrel need a coat of oil on the outside as a protectant?

I have a keymod rail, so I i have to oil that thing I think I'm going to have to take the rail off. Kind of a pain.

It'll make it look nice but that's about it. No external oil application is necessary. The only corrosive part is the barrel. However, that finish is very robust and you won't have any issues with it. Oil burns off the barrel when you shoot anyway.

All it will do is make the exterior greasy and when you shoot it will heat up and run off onto your hands. I wipe mine dry.

Aluminum doesn't rust, so what do you think you are doing by oiling the exterior? I suggest checking out the link below. You tube also has some good videos on where and how to properly lube an AR. I highly suggest Mil-Comm products, they aren't cheap, but quality seldom is.
