If I am building an ar-15 with a 16 inch bull barrel 1x8 .936 carbine gas system, and I use the quad rail below, will I need to buy a low profile gas block or a gas block with rails on it? I wasn't sure since this is my first build. If I do need a gas block with rails, what would be the shortest quad rail I can use for my build that I could use a low profile gas block?

First of all, I would try and steer you to a different Quad rail. That one is really heavy and more than likely a pos. Low profile gas blocks are used when you have a free float rail. Most would use a longer rail to take advantage of a longer sight picture. You will need at least a 9" rail to cover your carbine length gas block. You could use up to a 15" rail if you wanted. With a free float you can mount your front sight out on the end of the rail. What do you plan to do with this rifle? Plinking? Home defense? 3 Gun?
It makes a difference in how you put the rifle together. Do you need a variable scope or would a red dot really be best for your use? I would strongly suggest you look thru all of the picture threads and get a better idea of what you want. Save a little bit more and get a decent rail for you rifle. You will be glad you did. You can find them at half the weight. Good luck and welcome!

You don't need a railed gas block for any purpose other than mounting things on the gas block. The only interaction a railed gas block will have with a handguard will be getting in the way
If you're attempting a build on a budget, I'd strongly recommend the UTG Pro series handguards over the one you mentioned. They're a surprisingly nice product for the money. |
