I am building my AR and I have a question about the "correct" rail length.  I will have a Spikes 16" CHF mid-length barrel with a low profile gas block, I will be using MBUS sights as my primary sights until I can put optics on it, my question is this. Is it just a matter of personal preference as to the length of the rail or is there some type of rule of thumb, I am wanting to put a ST 12" BAR2 but I am wondering if there is some reason I should go shorter, thanks for any input. My use for this weapon will be mostly Range and personal protection, Mark

most people go long enough to at least cover the gas block. you don't have to, but I think it'd look odd to have a normal gas block and gas tube exposed

When it comes to free float rail systems there isn't really anything saying what length it needs to be.  It is smart to cover the gas block as it can stop something from hitting it just right and throwing it off.  As long as you are buying a solid quality rail longer length will mean a wider site radius giving you a more accurate aiming system.

As previously stated, it is pretty much up to your personal preference. I like my hand guards to be as long as possible, that way there is more real estate for hand placement and it also makes it easier to shoot the rifle while resting it on something.

I just went through this same situation and ended up with a 13" rail on my 16" barrel, it looks great to me.

Free float rail rule of thumb is no longer than the threaded end of the barrel.

You can go as long as you want to. I messed up and bought a 7" hand guard, which is for a carbine length gas system, I have a mid length gas system. I like the longer hand guards personally. Here is a picture of my 7" hand guard. I plan on getting a 12" hand guard before long or maybe a 15" if I can find one at a decent price.

A big part of covering the gas block is protecting it.  I wouldn't want my gas tube exposed.

So the answer to your question figgy is the 12 inch  BAR rail is an excellent choice for your midlength gas system.
