I am new to the AR scene and i have what may be a stupid question. I am looking for a new stock for my m&p 15 and alot of them say for milspec receivers, Milspec refers to just a regular stock receiver correct?

There are two sizes that are slightly different.  Milspec and commercial are the names for them.

It is important you get one and you know which one it is for when you want to buy a new stock down the road.  You will feel kind of silly when you buy a new stock and it doesn't fit.

Understand that many times commercial or civyspec as some people call them will often times fit on mil-spec receiver extensions or buffer tubes.  But mil-spec will not fit on commercial.  I believe the mp15-22s are milspec and the other smith and wessons are generally commercial.  I am sure one of the folks with smith and wessons will step in and clarify for you.

Also only one manufacturer went with the slanted back end as pictured on the receiver extension shown above.
The rest of the receiver extensions, both mil and commercial, are not slanted.

Can you elaborate on this?  Have they always used mil-spec or did they make the change at some point?
