I have a post ban, no flash hider, 16" pencil barrel, fixed handle, front sight Colt that I'd like to convert to a flat top, remove the front sight, add a quad rail and retain the pencil barrel.  I'd like to keep it a Colt and was thinking of buying a stripped Colt M4 upper.  Will my barrel, upper parts and lower work with a new Colt M4 stripped upper?

Thanks, Kristy

yes

Maybe not. If your barrel extension doesn't have M4 feed ramp cuts it will cause trouble.

I'd just keep the A2 as is and get a flat top upper and set it the way you want it.

An uncobbled Colt upper holds it's value better.

If the barrel extention on your 20" barrel does not have feed ramps just buy an A4 (flat top) reciever that has no feed ramps. Lets not overly complicate or overthink this, it's a simple 5-10 minute conversion. Feed ramps are over rated anyway, unless you are going to be doing a lot of full auto or burst firing you don't need them....<><....:)

And the above poster gave you some very good advice when he posted this:

A2's have zero value. I got a 6551 in near new condition for 800, and it included an old aluminum collapsing stock that I could sell any day of the week to the retro forum guys for 100.

Not too long ago we used to say the same thing about A1s:

I saw a nice all Colt A2 rifle in a pawnshop Tuesday (with scope) for $1500. He might go $1400 or $1350.

I will say that there are more buyers looking for flat top 16" barrel guns than anything else, but the value is there.

Rather than taking your upper apart, I would just buy a flat top upper complete with barrel.

PSA has uppers with chrome lined barrels starting at $329.95. They have a 14.7" midlength hammer forged upper for $419.95 plus options.

I really don't see the Colt A2's gaining much value as collectors items outside of the fairly rare transitional green labels. At least not for a very long time.

As far as functionality, most people hate irons, love optics and think 20'' barrels are way too long. Unless there is a fundamental shift in the prevailing attitudes of the AR15 community, A2 rifles, especially hbars, will remain worthless.

I'm currently happy with my gun collection. But I've considered buying a cheap Colt 6601, a flat top upper, and all the gizmos, and building a DMR rifle out of it for 3-gun and perhaps F-TR class midrange prone matches.

I'd keep the A2 upper intact and build a complete A4 the way I wanted it.

If you're like many of us, eventually the A2 would go back home and the A4 upper would get a new lower.

Normal progression of the illness.

I have bought 2-3 Colt rifles for $800 or less; So yes, they dont hold value.

Ironically, people sell just the lower on ARFCOM for almost that much.

I shouldn't say that. Try selling a post-ban bushmaster hbar. Good luck.

But the fad for the last ten years has been the M4 style, so all the 20'' rifles, all the A2 rifles and especially all the hbar rifles are in low demand compared to say the 6920 or similar rifles sold by other companies. If you like 20'' rifles, A2's, or hbars, there are plenty of deals to be had if you search gun broker long enough. Most people on gunbroker still think that used colts should sell for 1500, but once in awhile you will find one with a low starting bid that can be worth it.
