I am going to be purchasing one of the new DPMS G2 308 Recon very soon.  When looking at the tear down of the new bolt design it looks very similar and machined similar too a piston bolt.  I was thinking I could replace the gas tube extension that comes out of the bolt with a solid piece that I would machine.   Since the new G2 design follows the standard gas tube lengths I should be able to install once of the aftermarket piston systems from Adams Arms or something similar.  Does this seem like a crazy idea?

The gas tube extension on the new G2 bolt is part of the bolt forging and not an attached piece. It would take some cutting and/or milling to remove it. It looks like the easier way would be just to mill the upper tube portion and add a solid piece to the existing key.
