Im looking to get a sig 516 but there is a lot of confusion about the BCG and its compatibility with LWRC. What i want to know is what BCG i can expect from a new gen 3 gun and what its compatible with i.e. will an M6 carrier work in a gen 3 gun will the gen 1,2 bolt carriers work in a gen 3 gun etc
If you could explain the differences between the three 516's
help from actual 516 owners would be useful
The local gun shop has several 516's in for 1300$ each i haven't been in to see them yet so i don't know what gen they are
also is this a fair price for new guns i've got an old colt and haven't bought an AR recently
No you cant convince me not to buy a piston AR....Sorry

10.5" and up civilian 516's have compatible BCG's and are interchangeable due it's design originally from Land Warfare Resource Corporation. The new Gen 3 guns utilize the same Gen 1.5 and Gen 2 BCG's (i.e. they are the post-version of the BCG with the additional milling and 2 ounce lighter profile), and they are finished with a special anti-friction coating that requires no lube on the BCG itself. I do not advise against to lightly lubing contact points on this BCG. This one-piece BCG with integrated gas kay is proprietary to the gas piston design itself. Some 516 owners run the original LWRC BCG in place of the SIG version. Yes, LWRC Post 4/2008 Legacy M6 carriers will work in the 516.

Here are some (not all) differences I noticed in each civilian version:

GEN 1 - Original Land Warfare carrier design replica, Sides completely milled through gas block, threaded gas block valve, square adjustment knob, MOE stock and pistol grip
GEN 1.5A - Revised milled 2 oz lighter carrier, Sides milled completely through gas block, threaded gas block valve, square adjustment knob, MOE stock and pistol grip
GEN 1.5B - Revised milled 2 oz lighter carrier, Sides milled extruded inward gas block, threaded gas block valve, square adjustment knob, MOE stock and pistol grip
GEN 2 - Revised milled 2 oz lighter carrier, Sides milled extruded inward gas block, threadless gas block valve, rounded adjustment knob, MOE stock and pistol grip
GEN 3 - Revised milled 2 oz lighter carrier, Sides border milled only gas block, threadless gas block valve, rounded adjustment knob, SIG stock and pistol grip

It's a no brainer to pick one of these up if they are going for $1300 now. That's about the same price it was during the pre-scare, and M400's were selling at or above this price after/during the scare. Looks like prices are settling back down.
