Hey guys, I am very new to the "Ar/semi-auto" arena, therefore some of these questions might sound elementary! I recently purchased the Sig 516 Gen1 and was wondering if the changes to the Gen2 are significant enough to sell mine and purchase a Gen2?!? Also, I have searched the forum and reviewed the pic tutorial (for newbies) on how to lube and clean the AR, but it looks as if it was made for a DI gun. I was under the impression that you clean and lube a piston AR differently than you would a DI… .Can you guys help me out? Thanks

No real diff between the 2.  The main differences that I know is really the BCG is diff and nothing much else.  Someone else please chime in..

As far as cleaning, you will love that fact that you dont have to scrape carbon off of the Bolt or run your weapon wet...    Among other things...

The main difference is in how the op rod connects to the gas block, the old one had threads and screwed in, the new one locks in a slot similar to a SIG 551 but turns the opposite direction.

See, someone actually knew the major stuff..

If you go with the Gen 1, just place some anti-seize on the threads of the gas valve and you won't have any problems with it locking up on you.

that pretty much covers it.  If you managed to get an earlier model that had been hid out, then there could be a chance you may need them to fix your piston rod length.  Being the gen 1 your first sign would be weak primer strikes.  Seems that after a ton of searching I don't think that included a terrible amount of guns.  The only thing I wish was I could have finagled a way to keep that original bolt they stole when they made the repair....  it had nothing to do w/ the problem I'm sure but you know the whole long winded lwrc copy thing.... your gonna love your sig.

Thanks for all the replies! How can you tell if you still have the original bolt carrier?!?

i'll admit to not being an expert, but I had a whole different colored carrier, then that changed the bolt to have gas rings (?not needed).  There is some side by side pictures in here somewhere.  I'll also admit that mine prob. preforms just as well but it was just a cool factor having the other one.

If it looks 100% like a LWRC bolt carrier, you have a Sig Gen 1 carrier. Do a Google search on the part.

I got one of the very early Gen1's with the recalled carrier (stupid me sent it in before I knew what was happening).  Nothing wrong with the Gen1's, as other's have mentioned the biggest difference is in the gas adjustment mechanism.  I wouldn't trade a Gen1 for a Gen2 at this point, giving the current situations, not enough difference to warrant getting rid of one for the other (given in equal condition).  Unless you are talking less then 100 bucks or so in difference then it would be very tempting.  Now some of the later models have gone to some better coatings on the bolt carrier group, but then again my wear on my BCG is almost none with about 1500 rounds down the pipe.

I apologize, I threw this chart together as a reference prematurely to the fact that the v3 is the law enforcement full auto carrier, so it is not meant to be used as revision guide entirely. That is my actual v2 carrier in my GEN 1.5 (a GEN 1 with a revised carrier 2 oz lighter than the previous carrier and flip-up iron sights) and the v1 was in a GEN 1 (Land Warfare carrier with the RDS belonging to another honorable 516 owner).

An explaination of the bolt gas rings are in this video review:

SIG 516 CQB Review

With that being said, there is no need to sell a GEN 1 for a GEN 2 unless you want the FDE cerakoted version. Believe me, I've considered and compared it endlessly.

Man, I appreciate all the info! I was just now able to look at it and it appears I have the V2….
