Is the charging handle in the SR-556 proprietary? I'm wondering if I could install a 3rd party charging handle later.

you can use a standard style CH. i run a BCM in mines.

I just put the new raptor one on mine. I was impressed that it was better built and smoother than the stock one.

If it's an AR-15 platform, the charging handle grooves in the upper are standard.

The charging handles, especially that latch can usually be improved by replacement and the replacements usually do not cost that much (IMO).

That said, I've only upgraded my charging handle for cosmetic reasons :)

The SR-556 is mil-spec - this ought to help you with any mods you are considering.
