I currently own a Bushmaster AR-15 with a Bushmaster piston kit installed. My question is what it the correct method for cleaning the piston and how much lubrication is needed on the piston to keep it running smoothly? I've seen suggestions of keeping the piston "wet", but not sure exactly how much that is or how much cleaning the piston actually requires. Any insight on this matter is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm no piston AR expert but to my knowledge no lubrication on the actual piston head is required. It's just going to burn off in a couple rounds. I never oil the piston on my SR556, FS2000, AA, AKs, etc. My FN manual says specifically not to regarding the FS2000.  I don't have a Bushy piston but don't think you would want oil on it's piston either.

I just use Hoppes solvent, a plastic bristle brush, paper towel to clean. My FS2000 comes with a carbon scraping tool for heavy deposits. I just use my pocket knife on the other rifles for stubborn carbon.

I own the same system. As far as I know the piston itself has the same coating on it that the FZ BCG's use. I wipe the rod down with a paper towel. Then scrub the other components with a bronze brush to get the carbon off. I tend to put lube on the system if I'm gonna have the gun sitting around for a while and it's not going to be used.

Thank you very much. I wanted to make sure I wasn't neglecting the cleaning of the piston by not doing more than what you have described. Thanks again guys.
