So I downloaded the SIG 2011 catalog yesterday while at work.  I noticed the SIG 716 in .308.  I haven't seen this on their website before.  In fact their is no tab for it in their products section and their is nothing in the new products section.  I haven't seen or heard anything about it, has anyone else?  Is this a new product or did I just miss something?

If you google it, you will find a link for it and it goes to a SIG site. It was announced around this time last year. Original pictures showed it using an Armalite style magazines. But now they are saying it will take SR25 mags and PMags. The bastards. Had my hopes up. Here is 2 separate articles about the SIG716 that are from Sig Sauer themselves

This one looks like Armalite style mags

This one says it uses PMags

This kinda pisses me off. I bet their only reasoning would be that Magpul makes cheaper mags. I dont see how a company can make a choice based on 15$. Especially when you release images and prototypes using one magazine, getting the public to think it will be compatible with a specific kind of lower, then the final product comes out exactly opposite.

Say they make an Armalite style rifle. They can include a 5 magazine pack from Armalite, thats only 50$ more than PMags and the AR10 mags work better. So why do companies keep supporting the PMags? Because they are tupper wear?

The original AR10 magazine was a KAC/DPMS/Everything else mag.  The reason armalite switched to the M14 mag mod was due to the AWB.   It's one of those things wherin the Standard AR308 magazine is the KAC/Stoner magazine.  Why make anything else.

Frankly, I think that Armalite should just go ahead and make the Stoner pattern mag guns and be done with it.

I wonder what the pricing is going to be on these.

PMags are the bomb.  Ask any troop who's unit purchased pmags and used them in a firefight and they'll tell you they're the best EVER!  I've got a buddy who did a mag change in a fire fight, moved to a different position, and was solely focused on the fact that he left the empty pmag.  Said he was pissed he had to leave that mag behind.

I'm glad another company is doing their 308 for the pmag.  Metal mags suck.

Whatever you think, the M-14 and current Armalite AR-10 magazine works better than the "original" mag and PMags. Your friend was probably using an AR-15 PMag and I will not argue the fact that Magpuls AR15 mags are the shit. But not the 308 PMags. The M14 style mag is the most combat proven 308 magazine. Besides the FAL. The only justification companies can make about using the PMag is it is much cheaper, and has adequate reliability. But no one pays for the 100$ KAC, just use the PMags that dont work no where near as good. But it say MagPul on it and thats all most of you need.

Saw the Sig 716 at SHOT 2010, with the Eagle/Armalite magwell using modded M14 mags.

Saw the Sig 716 at SHOT 2011, with the original AR-10 (not Eagle) magwell using original AR-10/SR-25 mags.

I think Sig saw the light IMHO.  Armalite today is just Eagle with a different name.  They (Eagle) bought the name, the "AR-10" label/name (original Armalite was going out of business), and started making "AR-10" rifles.  They had bad timing, right around the clintoon ban.  Hence the move to modding M14 mags.

Eagle could've switched back to the original mag well and magazine after 2004, but didn't.

I guess some people want "AR-10" on their rifle, some want the original Stoner designed mag well.  There are suppliers for both

If the new Armalite pattern mags were true M-14 mags rather than modified mags, I'd be all for it.  Not only do I have a shit-ton of them, but they're fairly plentiful and available if you know what to look for in REAL USGI/CMI mags.  What irks me about the new AR-10 type mags is that they're modified mags that aren't used by anything else, effectively making it a proprietary mag.  That's a deal breaker in my book.

The mag will function in an M-14, you just have to hold it and it wont catch the bolt. I believe you can spot weld an M-14 tab on the AR10 mag and it will work in both. Just wont hold bolt open on M14. Its still an M14 mag, even though its been modified slightly. You can hold an unmodified M14 mag in the AR10 mag well and it will work just fine. The biggest problem with the "bubba" mags is getting the catch hole in the right place. Thats where alot of problems will come from. So they make the modifications for you along with a new follower and better spring. Either way you look at it, its still an M14 mag and will work in both.

I think it was actually a smart move to make the switch and think Noveske and Armalite should make the switch back also.  Could you point me to a link of testing that suggests AR10 mags work better than Pmags?  The path toward standardization would be good for 308 ARs.

I think MSRP will be in the 1800-2100 range.  The 516 MSRP is 1599.

Thank you gentlemen.  That price doesn't sound to bad at all.
