I was wondering if anyone has solid info regarding broken parts on piston ARs? I am dealing with a local funshop dealer poo pooing on piston systems regarding breakage. He is really hurting the piston systems around here with his information. TIA. Don't say search the forum, the search function here SUCKS! I was a dealer, paying member, and now I'm just a user. It still sucks! |

I've got around 10,000 rounds through three different Rugers in the last year. No broken parts to report yet.
I had somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,500-2,000 rounds through my DC-12 upper before I traded it off for a couple of Aimpoint sights. No broken parts there, either. |

Ruger gas piston: 1270 rounds total; nothing broken (note: 140 rounds of the 1270 rounds was fired full auto with the Ruger upper on an M16 lower with a modified to work with the Ruger AA gas piston bolt carrier)
Osprey gas piston kit on 11 1/2" Model 1 upper: 612 rounds total; nothing broken (note: about half the rounds fired were in full auto mode) All are in 5.56mm caliber and fired with mix of reloads, steel case, and surplus ammo, 55gr and 62gr bullet weight |

The last carbine class i was at. One student had an older LWRC one of the carrier key screws sheered off. Another student had a newer LWRC it got enough dirt/ fine gravel in the bcg that it locked up halfway in the buffer tube. Took a few minutes to get it going again don't misunderstand the fact i'm certain this would have stopped a DI weapon also but the piston wasn't magic in preventing it. |

I've run a Ruger through Kyle Lamb's VTAC Carbine 1.5 and Pat McNamara's TAPS class with no failures. And I plan on using a Ruger for the VTAC Street Fighter class this fall.
Well, I did have one failure during the Carbine 1.5 class but that was from a fat casing (reman ammo) that wouldn't chamber. |

Quoted: Ask the dealer to provide proof of his claims. His words and opinions mean nothing. Unfortunately the shop I hang at is not like AR15.com where we can call people liars unless they provide proof. ![]() I like the guy a lot, he is knowledgeable, but in this case is just resistant to change. As we say in the south, "you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar". I want information to win him over, not shame him into submission. Thanks for the input tho. |

I want information to win him over, not shame him into submission. Thanks for the input tho. take it easy partner. Nobody was called a liar. Just saying that sometimes opinions and facts can get crossed up in conversation, and it's best to do your own research. I personally have found very few employees at gun stores that were 100% factual when they speak to me, and sometimes it's downright funny some of the things I hear. It's all good |
Kates, no worries. I think ultimately I'll win him over, it will just take some time. I have a buddy that wanted a piston system then crawdadded on my because of my buddy. My friend and I have been teaching BASIC carbine classes and when he sees mine shoot and shoot and shoot he wants one. Then when he talks to my at the gun shop.......![]() |

I have an Adams Arms Piston system, an Osprey system, and an Ares system. All of them have worked great in all of the carbines I put them in. I did own a POF for a while, and at one point the transfer rod broke. It is the rod that is pushed by the floating piston. The rod was intact but the little head that touches the piston broke off and was rolling around in the piston chamber. I called POF and they sent me a new part for free. I did enjoy that rifle till that happened.
The Ares System has worked well except when I run a suppressor on my rifle. It would shoot the piston all the way out and then Hang up on the way back forward. I took it off of that rifle and put an Adams Arms system on my SBR that I run the Suppressor on. The Adams works well with the suppressor setting adjustment. I put the Ares on a 14.5 inch upper with a pinned on flash hider, so I dont have any problems with that system anymore. I haven't had the Osprey system very long, but I have been happy with it performance so far. It does have the carrier tilt marks in my buffer tube, But I don't really care much about that. The system runs fine. The Adams is my favorite so far due to the ease of use and ease of cleaning, Due to the fact that It all comes out the front of the gas block. Hope this helps. |
