I am really interested in a piston system but it seems that they all dump the gases inside the handguard and surrounding surfaces. So now it seems that you would have to remove the handguards to clean them and the surrounding area as well.
So my question is: 1) is this correct? and 2) are there any systems that dump the gas outside of the handguard (ie, forward of the front sight)? Thanks! |

It's the kind of dirt you don't really need to clean to me. Just wipe the area down with some oil after thousands of rounds when you do piston system maintenance and drive on. It's not going to affect function. |

I was wondering that about my LWRC and upon looking for it...found the inside of the front rails near the piston were covered in gunpowder residue...
Like another poster said: Its not affecting the performance of the weapon and you can clean it up all nice every 1000+++ rounds. With a FA piston, I'm keeping the inside of my rails a dirty little secret because cleaning rails SUCKS and takes too long. |

Blows it at an angle up and forward of the gas block. ETA: looks like someone beat me too it. |

The CMMG kit vents the gas straight up behind the gas block and again underneath the handguards. The carbon wipes off very easily. However, a front BUIS would get sprayed with gas and powder since it would sit right above the main vent port. Troy Industries said this would not damage their battle sights. |

Only longer on longer barrels gas bloks are open forward to dump gases. |

| I'm running an Osprey system and it really doesn't vent. It's more of a matter of just having blow by gasses leaked under the handguard. Well, that's in stock form anyway. I'm now running a piston that's 2/100ths undersized to get more blow by (to soften the recoil). Even with this much blow by, it hasn't gotten to a point where I feel compelled to have to clean it. I haven't worried about it in 3000 or so rounds. |

The CMMG tube is similar to the AK vented gas tubes (ChiCom setups usually have these) where there are holes cut out that allow the gas to vent. So far I have not had any problems just wiping away the residue and gunk. Even the carbon build up on the piston is easy to wipe off. |

I'm getting ready to put a light on my SR556, and I was wondering where it vented. I know the regulator key is covered in carbon after I shoot, but I can't tell exactly where it's coming out. I had originally been disappointed by this because it's a rather difficult area to clean. But, now that I've used the gun extensively, I think the decision to vent the gas inside the handguard was a good idea. With the gas where it is, I don't have to worry about burning or scorching my sling like a do on the SCAR. Plus the gas doesn't foul my front sight or contaminate my flashlight. Yeah, there’s some carbon built up under there. I clean it out with a homemade wooden scraper and a q-tip soaked with solvent. |
