I'd like to know if others have received retro barrels from Brownells with similar scratches and dings.

Here are a few pics that give a reference to what I'm referring to. There are quite a few more scratches and dings, but it wasnt easy to get good pics on my phone so I only took a couple, with and without flash. I think whoever installed the FSB and barrel nut could have been a little more careful so as not to scratch the finish and I'm guessing the dings came from not so gently laying barrels on top of each other. I would expect the barrel nut to scratch the finish behind the FSB due to it being able to move freely, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a little better forward of the FSB.

I'm not sure if I've just been lucky in the past, but other barrels I have when new didn't have these marks.

Was that one of their Blem barrels or was it full priced?

Full priced, received today. On the upside it was packaged much better than the one I received that came out of the box during shipping. If there was a little more care given during assembly it would have been great.

As stated in a different thread, my biggest problem with them is the packaging ( or lack there of ) of their barrels. Everyone else double or triple wrap their barrels to protect the barrel and more importantly the treads in a sturdy box. More than one I received has been protruding from the skimpy box with thread damage. No scratches on the barrels but I would almost rather have that than damaged threads. Hope they changed their shipping practices of barrels soon.

I've purchased my share of new barrels over the years. Some manufacturers pay attention to such things, and some don't. I would say this is in line with other barrels I have bought.

Doesn't look any worse than most of the barrels I have bought over the years, but I will say, the majority of the barrels I have bought have come with that green expandable covering and were in tubes with plastic end caps.  That said, those little dents, scratches and dings don't bother me at all, my long range bolt gun barrels cost me thousand of dollars each, my AR barrels are between $100 to $200 bucks.

I wouldn't care. But then, I have two M-16A1 Uppers that have plenty of wear on them. Just waiting for the money and opportunity to coincide and get barrels.

That would not be what I would expect to receive if I paid for a "new" barrel, and I would not be pleasantly surprised by the difference.

Personally, I would not care about little scratches and dings. I distress my barrels to look old and used. My question to the OP is, are you building a show piece or a shooter? If it is a shooter, install it and shoot it.

I always prefer to scratch up my stuff on my own instead of having it come that way through carelessness of the manufacturer - but it will be shot. I also prefer not to pay full price for something that is scratched up.

Yeah, I'm the same way. If I scratch it, ok. If it comes that way when it wasn't supposed to be, I'm not happy about it.

But I bet 95 of 100 of us used a free shipping coupon. I do every time.
What is that old saying???

If it means a slip ring riding home in a 16x20x34 cardboard box so be it.

I enjoy making packages.   Probably why I pay attention so.

Hey OP, when did you order your barrel? I've been dealing with a fiasco with Brownells going on many months now and I'm finally on the home stretch just waiting for my replacement barrel for one of the blems I had gotten before they were discovered to be bless. I can only hope Brownells is shipping backordered barrels finally. I've got an H&R and Colt clone waiting for their barrels on my work bench.

This is one of the 1/7 barrels. I think they are still out of the 1/12. You should call them if you are waiting on a 1/7. I ordered mine recently - don't remember exactly when. The first one that came in rode outside the box for part of the trip. It was damaged slightly - some cosmetic, but also some minor thread damage upon closer inspection. The second one was packaged much better on request and just looks as though whoever put it together was a little ham fisted. I guess they decided they couldn't see it from their house so they didn't care.

Darn, I was hoping it was a 1:12. Guess I'm still in for an unknown wait.

^me too.  It's crazy, I wonder if replacements for the 1/12 are ever coming
I really wish I had taken the refund and then just bought a blem when they were dirt cheap.  I'm going to abuse the barrel with full auto anyway, so accuracy isn't going to be a priority for me.

ar15sport has 1:12's in stock for the same price as Brownells. I've bought a few barrels from them in the past and there's never been a problem with packing.

If it wasn't for the trouble I went through to secure a backorder of one of the new barrels for $135 shipped overnight as soon as they arrive I would.

I had bought one of the barrels before it was known to be a defect. I bore-scoped the barrel myself and saw my barrel had hardly any blemish in it, so I decided to keep it. Then Brownells listed said blems for however much it was and I had a $20 off and free shipping coupon.

So the saga continues...

So I now have a barrel I paid $250 for that I now could have for $135 shipped. So I sought the possibility of a credit for the difference but that was a no go. So the CS girl recommended I return the barrel and order one of the blems at that price and then just get the refund. So I did this and... I now have no barrel whatsoever.

So I received every email about my replacement blem barrel except the tracking, I came to find that the replacement blem barrel never existed and so they just canceled the order and said sorry. From there I just went through customer service till I somehow ended up getting one of the new barrels on backorder for $135 with shipping.

And that's how my life got flipped-turned upside down.

^wow well that's certainly worth waiting for!

I'm giving them another week(I heard possible august 1st they may receive the barrels), and then after that if I haven't heard anything I'm requesting a refund and going with Ar15sport.  At least it'll be packed well also.
