I recently came across what I believe is a XM177E2 upper and stock (I can't post photos because I have no desire to use photobucket etc). The ONLY markings are an L and M near the rear of the carry handle. Nothing more. I even pulled the foregrip and there is nothing on the barrel. It has what appears to be about a 6 inch flash suppressor on it which seems common when doing a google search of this model. I would love any info anyone may be able to provide based on what I've said above, but I also have some questions. I would love a working AR15 out of this upper I have. And I'd love to keep it on the cheap. Here are my questions...

1) Will any lower from Anderson, Palmetto or even polymer bolt right up to an upper like this?
2) Will any modern BCG and charge handle work with this upper?
3) Will this retro style upper handle 5.56 and 223?

I find it frustrating there is zero manufacturer info on the upper. Was curious if it may be a Colt

if you got to https://forums.gunbroker.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=341120 and go to the photo at the bottom, that is exactly the upper and stock I came across. Same markings and all

I appreciate the help!

LM is Martin Marietta, USGI spares contract replacement upper. Not original to any XM177 model.

If the moderator is really 6 inches long you for sure have a commercially pieced together upper, with probably a DPMS or Olympic barrel.

Is this the upper you are referring to?

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Only if the barrel has a 5.56 chamber. If it has a .223 chamber you shouldn't shoot 5.56 through it. Not sure how to tell other than looking for markings on the barrel.

I don't think it is manufactured by colt, looks like it is pieced together from a lot of off brand parts. The LM marked upper receiver is likely original for the Vietnam Era (M16A1) but I don't see any other vintage parts.

Do the hand-guards have 6 holes or 7 holes in them? 6-Holes are correct for this rifle

Your main assembly concern will likely be if your stock came with a receiver extension tube. If it didn't you need to be sure to measure the stock and buy the appropriate mil-spec or commercial sized tube.

Yes, my upper looks the same as this one.

It does have 6 holes.

I wish I could upload photos. Mine is actually a little more "raw" looking. It actually appears more military like. Knowing where it came from and who bought it, I'd bet its all original. If this were in fact a LAR - Martin Marietta Army Spare, would it handle 5.56 as well?

Commercially built upper assembly. Not an XM177 upper assembly. It is XM177 inspired. DPMS, Bushmaster, and Olympic Arms built ones like this years ago.

I appreciate everyone's responses.

I'm new to rifles. Upon considering this, my initial thoughts were "can I make this a legitimate gun to plink around with".

AR15 parts are so plentiful these days however I didn't know if modern style stuff would bolt right up to what I have, or if it needed retro fit type parts.

Anyone have any photos or parts list they used for similar builds?
