I turned my Sp1 into a half decent 601 clone. I have a beater set of black furniture. You reckon it will be okay to play with the 601 furniture on it? I get tired of swapping parts when I go to the range, but I don't want to tear up something that took me 3 years to track down.

Enjoy the rifle the way you built it. I don't see how just going to the range is going to tear anything up as long as you're not  throwing it around etc.. Use your spare beater furniture to build a new beater rifle to be rough with.

The paint on 601 furniture is actually pretty tough stuff so just routine range use I don't think will be a problem.

Remember that stuff is 50 years old and has been abused much more by lots of others for many of those years.

I take mine with the green furniture to the range.  I'm just careful with it.

Yep. I have decent green furniture and take it to the range all the time. The only thing I worry a little about is that Edgewater letting go...

My edgewater is an original head and internals with *I think* a JT made body. I'm honestly more concerned about the bolt, but those were easier for me to run across than another left handguard, so I let it ride.

I wouldn't want to tear up something that took me 3 years to track down.

I'd do like the member above said and build a beater with a Fulton 604-ish upper and regular cheapo A2 lower.

I mean it's yours so of course do what you want but I don't like owning things I can't shoot. Even if I only shoot it once I want to feel like I can if I want to.

What are you doing at the range that you're worried about?

You low crawling around or running a bayonet assault course or something?

You're talking original black painted 601 furniture?  If it's beater grade, then, yeah--shoot it as is!  Like banshee said, that old paint is some very tough stuff.  You aren't likely to do any noticeable damage through normal use.
If you were talking about pristine original furniture, I'd probably still take it to the range, but I might be a little more careful where I lay it to avoid any scratches.  But I take out my black and green-furnitured rifles fairly regularly and have never noticed any damage to the paint.

FWIW, I also continue to run the Edgewaters in all my early riles--including the original 601. I don't fire it a lot on full-auto, but when I do, it still works as designed.
Of course, I've also collected all critical spare replacement parts, just in case.

Personally, I shoot with them on. I will say I treat them with respect, since they are older then I am. I fully inderstand the left one being an issue.
