I'm in the final stages of piecing together a XM177E2 clone. Unfortunately, one of the pieces eluding me is the correct butt stock. I already have a correct milspec two position buffer tube thankfully.

If I remember right, there were some commercial models produced that, while they will work on my buffer tube, would be a bit loose, correct?

I emailed a seller for one I found on Gunbroker, and I was informed that Colt only ever produced milspec stocks

Just trying to make sense of things before I commit to a purchase.

Is there any slop or play in the fit between the two?

A small amount.  But I added a bit of the fuzzy part of velcro and its just right now.

Yes commercial stock body will be loose on your 2 pos tube. Essential Arms is a good option for your tube.

On page two of their current brochure, they have what they are calling a Vietnam Era military dimension smooth
black coated 2 pos. aluminum car stock.

Safe to say this is not surplus stock, but rather new production modeled to look like the original, correct?

If you're talking about EA, yes it's a new repro, real good one too, black powder coated. I think they are about $150

There online catalog lists the "Vietnam Era" aluminum carbine stock kit , 2 position extension, buffer and spring, lock ring and end plate for $160.
Stock is $100 by itself.
Call Essential Arms for more accurate pricing.
Really good people to deal with.

here's a pic of an EA stock.  it's the top one in the pic , there's also 2 colt n1 stocks and a m&a n1 repro

the EA is a really nice stock but it will have a bit of play in it , easily fixed with a strip of tape if you want it tighter

I would have thought the powder coat would have more shine than that. I've seen other EA stocks that were more glossy, could just be the photo though.

Essential Arms makes an aluminum CAR stock much like the old Colt vinyl acetate model. It is mil-spec dimension. As far as a commercial stock that was made, Bushmaster made one and they had their own buffer tube (3-position) for it. It was not mil-spec or commercial dimensioned. These stock do not work well with either buffer tube. The stock could be distinguished by a "B" on the side of the stock. It also had a rough texture.

Thank you for the replies guys!

So if I am understanding correctly, the Essential Arms stock should fit on my milspec tube, correct? Worse case it is a tad lose and some tape will tighten it up.

Correct. That is as long as you get the EA mil-spec stock.

Awesome, thanks for helping me sort it out!

Piecing this build together has been a learning experience

Well hell, just called Essential Arms and they told me they are currently out of the stock itself, and only have the Stock/Buffer Tube combo

Gonna have to try again in a month or so
