I finally got a 2 position Colt RE and when I tried to torque the retro spanner nut to 40 ft/lb, the Brownells RE tool failed.  The pin bent and now I am left with a marred nut and am not sure how to proceed.  I have some more nuts, but do not want to waste another.  I am a stickler for assembling any AR to spec and only use quality parts.  On non-retro lowers I use the Hammerhead tool without issue (this plus the Geissele reaction block guarantees no slips).  I want to complete the lower, but do not want a repeat performance.  I hate the spanner type nut and can see why they went to the castle type.  Does anyone have a source for a better spanner for use on the retro RE nuts?

That sucks that your marred your nut. I didn't even know there was torque specs for that. I just tighten it until it is tight.  I use the old combo 1911 barrel bushing/spanner wrench that I have had since the 80s. But I do understand you wanting it to be perfect.

Thanks, I would love to see your tool.  There is no longer any demand, but a tool that would engage both of the spanner holes at the same time (no possibility of slippage) would be perfect.  Something that one could clamp on and then attach the torque wrench to would be perfect.  Then a clamp on staking tool that would do the Colt style square stakes (probably more demand for this tool).  Correctly torqued and Colt style staked = retro heaven.

Here is what you need. Kind of expensive at $75 + shipping
Found it on an H&K forum some where. They used it on an H&K rifle
Part # 52753 AMF

Looks good, but no slot for torque wrench.

No I have not. I just was it on a different forum and the person on there used it on an AR-15 type H&K rifle. Looks very well made.
I personally  don't torque any thing on an AR. Not even the barrel nut. I have never had anything come loose in all my years of building close to 100 rifles .
