This upper has been refinished in black (with a purple tint).
I can see faint runs inside, so I'm sure that it has a sprayed on finish.
I can't see any proofs at all in front of the port door, only a large #2.

Rebated lug, with a sideways "V" stamped

Forge flashing as been ground off of the carry handle in the rear and the front also.

The craftsmanship is pretty poor on the left side where the handle inner flashing was ground down.

Apologies,  double.

Since front lug is rebated probably Colt XM16E1.   2 stamping is probably insignificant rack room number or such.  If rebated front lug and proofs aren't simply covered up,  best guess is probablyXM16E1 replacement part receiver.  Not that uncommon.  If finish won't strip like talking about it probably arsenal refinish which were generally dipped during time frame.

Being refinished and who knows what else was done to it in last 40 years pretty good guess at best.  In many instances the proofs appear again,  once stripped,  then it's bonafide Colt factory assembled XM16E1 piece.

Looks like it took a hit under carry handle.

I agree, hit it with stripper and see what happens.  I don't mind natural wear and the stamped numbers wouldn't bother me on depending on the amount of wear and other parts you find to match.

I just picked up a very similar upper. No forge marks, rebated lug and refinshed in dark gray/black under black stove paint, which I stripped off. It has evidence of very faint proof marks. One nice thing about these refinished uppers is that the color is a pretty good match to most current lower receivers if you don't want to refinish the whole rifle.
