I am looking into getting a second XM16E1, but having a XM148 grenade launcher mounted to it. Does anyone know on the availability of the handguards and also whether there would be an interest in this on a broader scale? The guy I'm talking to has extensive experience in grenade launchers.....so I'm curious on what we can come up with. Ideally I want it to be able to chamber the round, but it will be a non-firing replica so that it can be transported easily across state lines. I would be grateful for help in locating research on these components and also it would help me to drop a message to him if there is any interest above and beyond. Seeing as this community has helped me with the assembly of my 601 and H&R M16A1, I would love to give back, and will keep people in the loop on this project.
Thanks again to all. I'll post pics of the H&R M16A1 and the Colt Model 01 later this week or early next week (I found a couple of waffle magazines finally!! They are reproductions, but that's fine still). v/r, Jon |

Handguards pop up on the EE, Gunbroker, and eBay from time to time.
Sometimes, you can find other parts as well but, they're very scarce. I have a barrel assembly and, that took time and money, and luck, to get a hold of. I've been trying to plan out and build one for awhile and, it's no easy task. Information on it and access to original parts is really hard to come by. There are members here with complete launchers but, I don't have the resources available to meet up with them and get all the required details. So, I'm stuck with making guesses from first hand measurements and pictures I stumble across on the internet. I've gotten a crude 3D model built and I've been working on a better one but, everytime I find a new part or new info, I end up having to redo the darn thing.

Someone on an airsoft forum made a really nice looking replica. It didn't function as a grenade launcher (which in airsoft is either a giant shotgun or a micro nerf-rocket launcher), but rather was used to hold that battery, which is normally inside the handguards on AR-pattern rifles with collapsing stocks. If you can try to track him down, he should have some dimensions. He machined it out of plastic, if I recall.

A few years ago SARCO had a couple incomplete demilled XM148 parts kits at Knob Creek, they might still have those in a box somewhere. Thanks!! I messaged him to see. This would be cheaper than having a new replica fabricated. Obviously if there's an interest, I'll put you guys in contact with him. I'll check on what a 37mm flare launcher would be....but I would imagine that would be a lengthier project due to needing BATFE compliance stating that it is NOT a DD. Quoted:

I don't recall where, but this one will be machined out of either aluminum or steel for the body. He said he's got some access to photos and can make a good approximation. (fingers crossed) I'll keep everyone up to date. v/r, Jon |

He said he'd sold everything to another vendor. I have that vendor's card somewhere but, from what I remember, all he had left for a few years were barrels, a handguard, sights, and a handful of small parts. He kept jacking up his prices every year so I never bothered... It really sucks how scarce the parts for these are. |
