Here's a link with good photos. Looks like at least one of them might be a bushmaster https://www.ar15.com/archive/topic.html?b=3&f=123&t=559691 |
| The 5.5" were made to make the 11.5" barrel legal. I've had one since early 80s. Came welded on from Bushmaster. Also note, they are smaller dia then the true 4.3-4.5" length moderator and replicas of such. Fwiw, at least in the AR retro world they're not all that well loved. |

Blazn,
Colt never supplied Car-15s with the XM flash hiders. They only did 16" barrels with A1 or A2 hiders. Bushmaster was the big name in lots of XM stuff. I recently built my XM177E1 SBR using a "close as possible" 4.5 inch XM faux Moderator that I purchased YEARS ago from Bushmaster. I have 2 and the second one may have come from another source, but I do not recall. Otherwise everyone was using the type you show with the extra "rings" cut into them. There was the type threaded at the very end (for 11.5" barrels) and those referred to as "slip over" that allowed you to just put them on 16" carbines to achieve the look. I am sure there are other makers, but at the time (early to mid 80s and later), Bushmaster was the go to company for all this stuff, including collapsing aluminum butt stocks. |

Believe it or not I had an A2 gau issued to me in Camp Hanson when I was in SOTG in the MARINE CORPS we used these for CQB at the kill house behind Camp Hanson back in 92-93 for counter terrorism I was new then and the Armory Lcpl their got a bonner because it was something different in the Arsenal. It was an A2 version and it had the moderator on them it was noticeably quieter not silent but definitely noticeable. It also had the old style stock 4 pos tube I will dig up some pics. We eventually got the MP5 about 6 Mos into training.

| I loved that weapon so much I had decided to make one never saw that configuration since that time seen the A1 type GUA for the SP in he Airforce so I had decided early this year to make one talked to a few makers they shook their heads and said but don't you want retro one or a flat top one? I told Tony at Tonys customs I want the rifle I carried as close as possible it was an A2 style upper with Moderator. I am almost their and after all these years I will have what I want. |
