55 gr will work just fine.  a lot of choices, should be able to find decent brass cased for $0.35/rd or less.

Google or your favorite search engine 5.56 M193 ammo and take it from there. Compare price and shipping costs. Good luck.

"Best" probably isn't going to be M193 or any other fmj ammo.  I suppose it depends on what your use is. If it's just for plinking, more or less, then 193 or Federal's bulk .223 ammo with fmj will be just fine. If you want more accurate, or hunting ammo, then any of the name brands loaded with 50-55 soft point/hollow point/or tipped bullets should do fine.

I went cheap 55gr and got disappointing results. Really, really hard primers. About a 1 in 10 FTF rate, and that's in 2 different rifles with standard trigger packs. Lake City brass.

AR15.com site vendor PSA (no affiliation) has American Eagle 50 grain tipped that is probably the  best factory ammo for budget coins  I've seen in a few years at  $5.99 per box with good quality re-loadable brass.  It really sizzles and is rather impressive when compared to current production Federal LC M-193 IMO. Don't expect the best customer service or fastest shipping but items will show up and bill will be correct.

Interesting!  I've fired literally 10K's rounds and never had aammo related FTF with factory LC.  Had plenty of popped primers but never a squib or FTF even with reduced springs.  The most current production LC I have used is 2014 stamp and it really was poor quality especially compared to older production LC ammo.  Don't know if they are simply passing off rubbish to civillians or not but very inconsistent ammo through the chrony and on paper.

I have been using Federal XM193 (and American Eagle 5.56x45mm NATO) in all of my 1/12 barreled ARs. Never had any issues. Back in the late '70s, I was issued Federal M193 ammo for my M16A1.

".... Lake City brass ...."

From the sound of it, I believe Max might have been referring to 'remanufactured' ammo that was made using just the LC brass.
As for good ammo, I've used PMC 5.56 FMJBT ammo since about '79 and have had excellent results in 1:12 barrels.
Good value, accurate, and no issues.

I picked up some Wolf Gold 55 gr FMJ from The Armory recently based on the reviews on this site and elsewhere. It's currently on sale for $299.99 plus shipping for 1K rounds in a .50 cal ammo can. Shipping was only $10 to NC (they're in VA Beach).

I ordered at 10 pm on a Wednesday night, order was shipped on Thursday
and it arrived on Friday. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them or buy
from them again.

I can drive across the river and pick it up in person I may go pick up a few boxes on Saturday, kind of wanted to try the Wolf Gold for a while. It gets good reviews and is supposed to be loaded to M193 velocities.

Check out Freedom Munitions. I have used bunches of their 9mm FMJ and not as much 5.56 55gr. I just got an email from them $5 shipping on orders over$99. If you want to go big check out "pallet ammo".I have used their ammo in both modern and retro AR's.
