http://www.accumounts.com/

In the k98 mounts section of accumounts i found what appears to be 1" rings that would be compatible with the original single point mount.   So that was interesting in that half the project would essentially already be done.  Granted the base and nut are still required.

I shot him an email.  I had another question.  What is the source of the information on what mount they used?  I looked all over and found only foggy pictures and generic references to mounts that required electrical tape reinforcement.  In black rifle one the single point is pictured on a weaver adaptor in weaver one inch rings.  That picture is a couple years after the raid.

I guess weaver introduced those rings in 1953.  It would seem reasonable that mount could have existed at that time and that would make weaver ideal for that part.

I'm pretty sure the reproduction is made using one of the two or three originals in hands of members of the Retro Forum as a blueprint..

How were the originals traced to being original?  What brand name were the mounts marketed under?

The JFK SF Museum doesn't even have one.  They have a singlepoint electrical taped to a carry handle.

I visited the son tay association page, and there were no pictures or mention of the mounts.

Bud Sydnor, commander of the ground forces on the Son Tay raid, was born and raised about 11 miles from me.  We are both Alumni of the same ROTC program.  He says this is the real deal and that's good enough for me.

Regarding the JFK museum, not only is their Singlepoint held on with electrical tape (Bud said there was no tape but the glossy straps on the mount gave that appearance) but they have a 607 as their display weapon.  I emailed the curator/director and she was less than willing to change the display for the sake of historical accuracy.

Some museums are using the correct mount...

Here is mine as approved by Bud...

The original mounts were manufactured by Singlepoint and called Singlepoint strap mounts.

There's a possibility the British SAS used the SinglePoint sight on their Colt AR15 in Aden or other far flung locations in the late 1960s and SinglePoint would of provided the mounts, might be some mounts floating around the UK. It's not a very sharp photo but the SinglePoint in the display case next to the handcuffs looks like a later model with the convex dome, it should be a clear round dome but as you said the curator wasn't too concerned re historical accuracy. Did some further searching and read the after action report that stated ArmaLite Costa Mesa CA provided the 50 SinglePoints and mounts, no doubt ArmaLite was capable of making the custom mounts. Chances of finding any of the original ArmaLite mounts will be like hitting the lottery.

Does your friend know the brand name of the mount?  It is pretty rare that anything on the market lacks one.  They mentioned these were commercial off the shelf items.  I thought Bull simons specifically mentioned the use of tape because the mounts were loosening?  Sounded like they were missing loctite possibly.

It was below the sweet pics, but UXB wrote: "The original mounts were manufactured by Singlepoint and called Singlepoint strap mounts."

Thanks.  Found this: this was interesting- a period photo of the sight in the mount (FAL) but it's a period marketing photo.

I wonder if the ZF4's are 1" diameter.  The mount would still be required and I suppose that's the harder part to find.

I've recently decided to build Son Tay Raid GAU-5A/A in place of a GAU-5A
