So it looks like you have to buy a Colt SP1 to get an early dust cover these days lol. I am fairly handy in a shop around tools, has anyone taken a dust cover apart before? How far do they disassemble, can you remove the "square" pad? I have a few ideas to convert some for myself and maybe some others if this is possible. |

If not in a big rush and you have the skills, go ahead and try your hand at modifying one. If you're like me, you really enjoy fabbing things up yourself. Allot more gratifying, and sometimes cheaper too. |

| There's supposedly an Urban Legend about a guy who has a barn in Wisconsin and inside is a pallet full of surplus A1 port doors, under a pile of helicopter parts that he bought from DOD and intends to sell for a buck fifty each as Ice Scrapers. Some A$$ hole has persisted this rumor for years. I think the city is Plainfield. And the user name is Ed Gine....I call BS. Best bet is the EE. and what ever happened to the El-ray seller. I guess he never re-upped. ? |
| I recently purchased from E bay a reproduction M16A1 dust cover for I think it was $11.95 plus shipping. It came complete with all the necessary parts. Problem was my ejection port door had a 1/8" gap opening in the closed position. Determined that the nipple assembly what you call it on inside of port door was mounted too low from factory. The nipple wouldn't engage enough for a complete close. Pissed me off. Put the A2 door back on for the time being and it shuts like it should. I'll be taking it apart soon to see if I can rectify problem. If not, money in the commode. BDI was company seller's name. |

I am going to be using the reproduction on my XM177E2 and keeping the other original one for a later build. I made a mistake and put an A2 door on it when I built it a couple years ago. |

Those repro doors are still not quite to spec - they look the part at a glance, but the latch button/post is not the right size & is positioned out away from the lip of the door to far so that, though the door does close - while closed, it does not close tight against the receiver, but rather leaves a slight gap between the door & the receiver.

I have used one of the reproduction doors I bought on a build and it fit perfectly. It all depends on who made them. I bought mine from a guy on the forum. |

Springs supplied have too much tension. Modify spring supplied or simply use a milspec spring and gap should go away. Something I noted when they first became available. I replaced with a Colt spring and gap disappeared. |

They look surprisingly decent quality for the price. How do they close and hold? Others have said the fit isn't tight against the receiver.. |

The 2 repro doors that I have are both from Brown Dog Industries, and both are simply off-spec from issue doors. It is not a matter of spring tension as when the doors are closed, the posts are completely extended. The door posts are simply located too far away from the lip of the door, and so look just as pictured in SeanC's post - leaving a slight gap between the receiver & the door.
Hope this helps... |

It isn't terrible. Especially for $12 bucks or whatever they cost.... Thank You. |
